The photograph captures the owl's rounded head, dark eyes, beautifully patterned feathers, and alert expression against a soft gray winter background. USPS released the 10-design Forever stamp booklet on October 16, 2020, in Winter Park, Florida, celebrating the beauty and serenity of northern winter landscapes. Art director and designer Derry Noyes selected existing photographs featuring winter wildlife, barns, trees, snowy landscapes, and horses. Ashton Potter (USA) Ltd. printed the self-adhesive stamps using offset lithography.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Barred Owl (Strix varia) is a large woodland owl native to North America, recognized by its rounded head without ear tufts, dark brown eyes, pale facial disks, and intricately barred and streaked brown-and-white plumage. Unlike many other North American owls, which have yellow or orange eyes, Barred Owls have dark eyes that give them a particularly expressive appearance. They inhabit mature forests, wooded wetlands, river corridors, and swamps, where they hunt small mammals, birds, amphibians, and other prey.

BARRED OWLS IN WINTER: Barred Owls generally remain in their territories throughout the year, making them familiar residents of northern woodlands even during snowy winters. Their dense plumage provides insulation against cold weather, while their exceptional hearing helps them locate prey among fallen leaves, branches, and snow. Without summer foliage obscuring the view, winter can also offer birdwatchers an opportunity to spot these otherwise well-camouflaged forest birds perched among bare branches.

BARRED OWL CALLS & WOODLAND SOUNDS: The Barred Owl is especially famous for its distinctive series of hoots, traditionally remembered by the phrase “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” Its resonant calls are among the most recognizable nighttime sounds of eastern North American forests. Barred Owls may also produce a remarkable variety of whistles, barks, and chattering vocalizations, particularly when interacting with mates.

OWLS & CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS: Owls have become popular elements of woodland Christmas decorations, winter greeting cards, ornaments, wreaths, and rustic holiday illustrations. Their soft feathers, watchful eyes, and association with quiet forests complement natural seasonal materials such as evergreen branches, pinecones, birch bark, snowy foliage, and woodland animals. Although owls are not traditional Christmas symbols in the same way as reindeer or cardinals, they have a strong place in contemporary woodland holiday style.

WOODLAND WINTER & HOLIDAY STYLE: Soft gray dominates the winter background, complemented by the owl's layered brown, white, and dark feather markings. This restrained palette pairs beautifully with ivory, charcoal, kraft paper, forest green, silver, natural wood, birch bark, and understated holiday stationery. Whether your Christmas cards are rustic, woodland-inspired, elegant, farmhouse, or minimalist, this stamp adds quiet character and natural detail without overwhelming the envelope.

OWLS & SYMBOLISM: Across many cultural traditions, owls have been associated with wisdom, observation, intuition, and mystery, although their meanings vary considerably between cultures. Their keen hearing, watchful appearance, and ability to navigate dark environments have contributed to their reputation as perceptive creatures. In contemporary symbolism, owls are frequently connected with thoughtful reflection, independent judgment, and seeing beyond the obvious.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Barred Owl design symbolizes wisdom, intuition, patience, awareness, mystery, and quiet resilience. Its watchful presence among winter branches suggests the importance of observation and reflection, while its ability to thrive in the forest throughout the colder months represents adaptability and endurance. For Christmas cards, winter greetings, and meaningful correspondence, this stamp conveys thoughtful connection, peaceful contemplation, and an appreciation for the hidden beauty of nature.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS issued Winter Scenes in 2020 as a 10-design Forever stamp booklet celebrating the serenity and unexpected color of snowy seasonal landscapes. Five designs featured winter wildlife, including deer, a cardinal, an owl, a blue jay, and a rabbit, while the remaining photographs highlighted barns, snow-covered trees, a woodland road, and horses pulling a sleigh. Together, the photographs present winter as a season filled not only with snow and stillness, but also wildlife, movement, tradition, color, and quiet beauty.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing.
