Frequently asked questions about using vintage stamps for mailing

Using Vintage Stamps FAQ

Are the vintage stamps you sell still valid postage for mailing today?

Yes! All the stamps we sell are unused/uncanceled genuine USPS postage stamps that can be used to mail your invitations, announcements, letters, and parcels today. So long as it's never been used/cancelled, every stamp ever issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) is still valid for use today at its original face value. Forever stamps are valid for the current USPS rate to mail a standard-sized rectangular letter weighing up to one (1) ounce. With vintage stamps, you'll likely need to add multiple stamps to your mailing in order to satisfy current postage rates for mailing.

How do I determine the amount of vintage postage necessary to mail my letter?

  • First, check current postage rates at USPS.com to determine how much postage is necessary to mail your letter/parcel.
  • Carefully weigh your mailing to determine its weight in ounces.
  • Make sure to choose a combination of vintage stamps that (when added together) will satisfy the amount of postage necessary to mail your letter or parcel.
  • Extra postage may be required to mail "non-machinable" envelopes with a wax seal, ribbon, that are thicker than 1/4-inch, that don't bend, are square shaped, or are an irregular size (this is often the case with wedding invitations).
  • To be sure your chosen stamps will meet the current USPS mailing requirements for your mailing, we recommend taking an example mailing (with all contents included and any special wax seals or ribbons attached) to your local post office. Any U.S. Post Office should be able to confirm how much postage is required for your particular mailing.

Are vintage stamps any different from new stamps issued by USPS?

No, except... the face value of vintage postage is usually less than the amount of postage required to mail a standard-sized letter today (except forever stamps). As such, you'll need to get creative! The fun of mailing with vintage postage stamps is the creativity involved with curating a set of stamps that, when added together, will suffice to send your letter today.

Many vintage stamps are the older "gummed" variety (vs. self-adhesive stamps). Gummed stamps are moistened to adhere the stamp to your letter. We always recommend using a glue stick to adhere vintage gummed stamps to your letter.

How big are the vintage postage stamps you sell?

United States postage stamps come in a myriad of different sizes. We try to provide approximate measurements for each stamp or stamp set sold on the Heritage Post House website — please refer to the listing description for the specific stamps you are interested in purchasing. Feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to confirm the measurements for any stamp or set we sell. Shop unused postage stamps now.

How do I apply vintage postage stamps to my mailing?

Some of the stamps we sell are self-adhesive. Like a sticker, you simply peel off the backing and apply the stamp to your envelope.

Most older stamps are the "gummed" variety. Gummed stamps are applied by moistening the back of the stamp and then affixing the moistened stamp to your envelope. To ensure good adhesion, we recommend using a glue stick to affix gummed stamps to your envelopes. We like using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks, as these glue sticks allow you a few minutes before drying to reposition your stamp if necessary.

How should I handle and store vintage postage stamps?

  • Vintage stamps should be handled with care.
  • Do not expose to moisture.
  • Store unused stamps in the provided glassine envelopes.
  • Store your stamps in a cool dark place.
  • Avoid long exposure to UV light.
  • Handle stamps with clean/dry hands, cotton gloves, or tweezers.

Frequently asked questions about wedding invitations

Wedding Invitations FAQ

Why would I choose to mail my wedding invitations using vintage unused postage stamps?

When you mail your wedding invitations using vintage postage stamps, you'll create a special "wow" moment for the guests receiving your invitations. Your wedding is arguably the most special day of your life until now, and you've obsessed about every detail... Choosing vintage postage to mail your invitations is one of those special out-of-the-ordinary details that is sure to bring smiles to the faces of your wedding guests.

In a world of electronic overload, receiving a mailed invitation says "this is something really special, and you are special to me." Applying a generic USPS-printed postage label to your envelope can serve to dull the feeling conveyed by your invitation, making it seem more ordinary. But when your guests see the thought and emotion conveyed by the specially-selected personalized vintage postage stamps applied to the outside of your invitations, they immediately appreciate the extraordinary significance of your special day.

Instead of being tossed in a drawer, wedding invitations mailed with vintage postage are often photographed and tagged on social media posts. Your guests will probably ask why certain stamps were chosen, a conversation ensues, and thus begins the affair... months before the actual event itself!

How much vintage postage will I need to mail my wedding invitations?

Many wedding invitations require extra postage as they don't meet USPS requirements for normal mailing. Extra postage may be required for "non machinable" envelopes that include a wax seal, ribbon, are thicker than 1/4-inch, don't bend, are square shaped, or are irregular in size. We recommend taking an example invitation (with all contents included and any special wax seals or ribbons attached) to your local post office. Any U.S. Post Office should be able to confirm the amount of postage required to mail your wedding invitations.

How do I choose the right vintage stamps to mail my wedding invitations?

This is the fun part! After you have determined how much postage is required to mail your particular wedding invitations (see above), you will now need to curate a "collage" of vintage postage stamps that collectively add up to the amount of postage necessary to mail your invitations. When selecting your wedding invitation stamp set, factors for choosing vintage stamps may include the face value of the stamps, color, and stamp themes that hold special significance for you and your spouse and families.

If you have the time and enjoy creative "scavenger hunts," curating your own set of vintage unused postage to mail your wedding invitations can be great fun. If you are pressed for time (understandable considering all that goes into planning a wedding), you may find that one of our curated postage sets meets your requirements. Alternatively, we've helped hundreds of couples curate that perfect set of personalized postage for their invitations, so choosing our custom curation services may be a good choice for your too.

Can I combine vintage postage stamps with current postage stamps, including forever stamps, to mail my wedding invitations?

Yes! If you're working on a budget, combining vintage postage stamps with current postage stamps may be a good way to save some money while still sending your wedding invitations with vintage flair.

Why do my wedding invitations require "hand cancelling" and special handling by USPS?

All mailings sent through the United States Postal Service (USPS) must have their postage "cancelled" by the service. Cancelling a stamp is the process of marking it as used, and ensures that the stamp can't be used again. For normal mail that conforms to their regular standards for size and weight, USPS employs automated sorting, routing, and cancelling machines (the majority of mail is sent via this automated system). When a letter does not conform to the USPS standard size and weight requirements (as is the case for most wedding invitations), the post office routes this "non machinable" mail through a special handling system, which costs more. Accordingly, all non machinable mail (including most wedding invitations) must be "hand cancelled" by your local post office so they can rout it through their special handling system for mailing and delivery.

Extra postage is required for "non machinable" envelopes that include a wax seal, ribbon, are thicker than 1/4-inch, don't bend, are square shaped, or are irregular in size.

Ordering & Delivery FAQ

I'm looking for a particular stamp I can't find on your site... Are all your vintage postage stamps available through the Heritage Post House website?

No. We literally have thousands of unused vintage USPS stamps that are not yet listed for sale via our website (we are working on it, but it's a time-consuming process!). We are also a top seller of unused vintage postage stamps on Etsy. If you're looking for a particular U.S. postage stamp and you don't see it listed on our website or in our Etsy Shop, please contact us to inquire — we likely have it and will be happy to sell it to you!

How long will it take to receive my stamps after placing my order?

The time it takes for your order to reach you depends on the shipping method you chose at checkout, and the processing time (the time it takes for us to pick, pack, and hand your order off to the shipper). We ship from California, and most orders are processed and handed off to the shipper within 3-5 business days, sometimes sooner. If you absolutely need your stamps sooner than our normal processing time, or before a certain date, we can usually accommodate Rush Orders with pre-approval.

Please refer to our Shipping Policy for more detailed information about processing and shipping times.

I'm in a rush. Do you offer rush processing and expedited delivery services?

Yes! We ship from California and most orders are processed and handed off to the shipper within 3-5 business days of receiving your order, sometimes sooner. If you need your stamps sooner than our normal processing time allows, or before a certain date, we can usually accommodate Rush Orders for a small fee and with pre-approval.

If you need your vintage postage stamps in a rush, please choose a shipping method at checkout that will ensure delivery according to your required deadline. Note that estimated shipping time is not the same as processing time; the two are added together to determine an approximate timeline for the delivery of your order.

Please refer to our Shipping Policy for more detailed information about processing and shipping times.

Will my vintage stamp shipment be insured against loss or damage?

All of our shipments are automatically insured for up to USD $100 in loss/damage by the United States Postal Service (USPS) [details]. If your order value exceeds USD $100, we recommend that you purchase additional shipping insurance to cover the full amount of your order. You can purchase additional USPS shipping insurance coverage for your order for up to USD $5,000 in indemnity to protect against loss or damage. If you do not purchase additional shipping insurance for your order over USD $100, you accept full responsibility and liability for any shipping related loss or damages in excess of USD $100.

What is your return policy?

You must contact us within seven (7) days of receiving your order to request a return or exchange. We will happily accept pre-authorized returns or exchanges for most items within fifteen (15) days of receipt of your order, excluding custom curated stamp sets and related services (there are no returns or exchanges for custom curated stamp sets or custom curation services). Please consult our Refund Policy for all return/exchange requirements, terms, and conditions.

How does Heritage Post House determine pricing for its unused vintage postage stamps?

Pricing unused vintage postage stamps is a complicated task. As with any limited edition collectable, the value for unused vintage postage stamps can fluctuate according to factors such as market availability (how many of the same stamp are currently available for purchase), the face value of the stamp, condition (the mint condition stamps we sell are more expensive), and the age of the stamp (the date it was issued by the USPS). Separating a single stamp from a set, block, or sheet also drives up price since the other stamps in that set/block/sheet may not sell as well as the single stamp that was plucked out. Generally, the more rare a postage stamp, the higher its price will be. Our pricing is based on these factors and what we pay for our stamps. We work hard to deliver competitive pricing that will also sustain and grow our business.

BEWARE OF COUNTERFEIT STAMPS: If you see postage stamp pricing from other online vendors that seems too good to be true, it probably is! Unfortunately some high-value postage stamps (especially forever stamps) have been counterfeited. When you purchase counterfeit postage stamps, you run the risk of your mailing being returned or confiscated by the USPS.

Heritage Post House works with longstanding reputable stamp wholesalers and takes numerous precautions to ensure that we sell genuine unused USPS postage stamps.
