This set is called the "Christmas Issue Se-Tenant" and was originally issued on November 9, 1964. It was the third set of Christmas stamps and the first se-tenant ever issued by the USPS, meaning that the stamps were attached or "se-tenant" in French. A se-tenant is a sheet of stamps with different designs or values printed together. The name comes from the French phrase for "joined together" or "holding together."
This third U.S. Christmas issue was unique because it was the first time the United States Post Office had printed more than one stamp design on one sheet. Each block of four contains four different illustrations that were issued attached or "se-tenant." The first stamp features mistletoe, a symbol of peace according to ancient tradition. The second stamp depicts holly, symbolizing the thorns placed upon Christ's head. The third stamp shows evergreens, often used for Christmas trees and wreaths. The final stamp features the traditional Christmas flower, the poinsettia.
This set of stamps features four different illustrations, each representing a traditional winter plant and symbol associated with Christmas.
