STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1982 Arizona State Bird and Flower stamp was issued as part of the State Birds and Flowers se-tenant pane of 50 stamps, with one design representing each U.S. state. The Arizona stamp features a watercolor illustration of a Cactus Wren paired with a Saguaro cactus blossom, Arizona’s official state bird and flower. The pane was issued on April 14, 1982, in Washington, DC, and in state capitals. The artwork was created by father-and-son wildlife artists Arthur and Alan Singer, with Arthur painting the birds and Alan painting the flowers. Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using photogravure, the set became one of the most popular U.S. stamp issues of its time.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Cactus Wren is a distinctive desert bird known for its warm brown and white markings, curved bill, spotted breast, and lively presence among cactus, shrubs, and arid Southwestern landscapes. Closely associated with the Sonoran Desert, the Cactus Wren brings a rugged, natural, and regionally specific quality to this stamp and symbolizes resilience, adaptability, resourcefulness, and a spirited connection to desert life.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: The Saguaro cactus blossom is a creamy white flower with a bright yellow center that blooms on the towering saguaro cactus, one of the most iconic symbols of the American Southwest. As Arizona’s state flower, the Saguaro cactus blossom reflects desert beauty, endurance, renewal, and quiet strength. Its elegant bloom adds soft botanical romance to the stamp’s bold desert character.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Cactus Wren evokes resilience, energy, adaptability, and the ability to thrive in a rugged landscape, while the Saguaro cactus blossom symbolizes endurance, renewal, beauty, protection, and life flourishing in unexpected places. Together, the bird and flower imagery creates a distinctly Southwestern expression of strength, warmth, rootedness, and natural grace. This stamp is especially fitting for Arizona weddings, desert celebrations, botanical stationery, Southwestern correspondence, graduation announcements, thank you notes, travel mail, and messages celebrating love, heritage, or meaningful new beginnings.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The State Birds and Flowers issue was a 50-stamp se-tenant pane released in 1982 to celebrate the official birds and flowers of every U.S. state. The project began after Fleetwood commissioned original paintings from father-and-son wildlife artists Arthur and Alan Singer, whose artwork impressed U.S. Postal Service officials. Each stamp featured unique watercolor artwork, making the issue the first set of its size to include original art for every individual stamp. It was the second U.S. sheet of 50 with all different designs and remained among the most popular issues in U.S. postal history.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
