STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: A colorful blue jay perched on a tree branch provides one of the liveliest wildlife portraits in the 2020 Winter Scenes issue. The photograph highlights the bird's bright blue crest, intricately patterned wings and tail, white underparts, and bold facial markings against a softly blurred winter landscape. USPS released the 10-design Forever stamp booklet on October 16, 2020, in Winter Park, Florida, celebrating the beauty and serenity of snowy landscapes across the northern United States. Art director and designer Derry Noyes selected existing photographs of winter wildlife, barns, trees, snow-covered scenery, and horses. Ashton Potter (USA) Ltd. printed the self-adhesive stamps using offset lithography.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is an intelligent, highly vocal North American bird belonging to the crow family, Corvidae. Its unmistakable appearance includes brilliant blue upperparts, a prominent crest, white and pale gray underparts, a black collar, and black-and-white markings across its wings and tail. Blue Jays inhabit deciduous and mixed woodlands, forest edges, parks, and suburban neighborhoods, feeding on acorns, nuts, seeds, insects, fruits, and occasionally small animals. Their striking blue color is produced largely by the microscopic structure of their feathers rather than by blue pigment.

BLUE JAYS IN WINTER: Many Blue Jays remain in their territories year-round, although some migrate irregularly depending on food availability and other conditions. During winter, they may gather in small foraging groups, visit backyard feeders, and rely on stored nuts and seeds collected during autumn. Their bright blue plumage is especially noticeable against bare branches and muted winter landscapes, making them among the most colorful familiar birds of the colder months.

BLUE JAYS & OAK FORESTS: Blue Jays play an important ecological role by collecting and caching acorns, sometimes carrying them considerable distances from the parent oak tree. Not every buried acorn is recovered, allowing some to germinate and grow into new oak trees. This seed-dispersal behavior helps support the regeneration and spread of oak woodlands, demonstrating how a familiar backyard bird can influence the landscape around it.

BLUE JAYS & WOODLAND SOUNDS: Blue Jays are known for their varied calls, including loud, ringing cries, softer whistles, and occasional imitations of hawks. Their alert behavior often draws the attention of other birds to nearby predators. Although their bold personalities can sometimes appear aggressive at feeders, Blue Jays are also social, observant, and capable of complex communication.

BLUE BIRDS & CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS: Blue birds, including Blue Jays, are frequently represented in contemporary winter decorations, Christmas ornaments, holiday cards, and woodland illustrations. Their cool blue coloring complements snow-covered evergreens, white branches, silver accents, and traditional winter palettes. While Blue Jays are not historically central Christmas symbols, they bring a distinctive and recognizable North American wildlife character to seasonal correspondence.

WINTER BIRD & HOLIDAY STYLE: The blue jay's rich blue feathers create the strongest color accent, complemented by soft gray woodland tones, natural brown branches, white plumage, and black markings. The palette pairs beautifully with navy blue, powder blue, silver, ivory, white, evergreen, kraft paper, and understated winter stationery. Whether your Christmas cards are woodland-inspired, rustic, elegant, traditional, or nature-focused, this stamp adds vibrant color without overwhelming the envelope.

BLUE JAYS & SYMBOLISM: Blue Jays are often associated with communication, confidence, intelligence, resourcefulness, and determination. Their conspicuous calls, striking plumage, and assertive behavior have contributed to their modern reputation as expressive and resilient birds. Their habit of gathering and storing food also provides a natural connection to planning, preparation, and perseverance.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Blue Jay design symbolizes confidence, communication, loyalty, resourcefulness, awareness, and resilience. Its brilliant blue plumage against the quieter winter landscape suggests individuality and the courage to stand out, while its winter survival habits evoke preparation and adaptability. For Christmas cards, holiday greetings, and meaningful correspondence, this stamp conveys cheerful connection, optimism, and appreciation for nature's enduring vitality.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS issued Winter Scenes in 2020 as a 10-design Forever stamp booklet celebrating the serenity and unexpected color of snowy seasonal landscapes. Five designs featured winter wildlife, including deer, a cardinal, an owl, a blue jay, and a rabbit, while the remaining photographs highlighted barns, snow-covered trees, a woodland road, and horses pulling a sleigh. Together, the photographs present winter as a season filled not only with snow and stillness, but also wildlife, movement, tradition, color, and quiet beauty.
