STAMP HISTORY: The 29c Bluets postage stamp was a commemorative issue from the 1992 “American Wildflowers" series, a pane of 50 stamps celebrating endemic American flora. Its official first day of issue was July 24, 1992, with the stamp's debut held in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 International Floral and Garden Exposition. The stamp features a watercolor painting of the Bluets flower (Houstonia caerulea), also known as "Quaker ladies," by Alaskan artist Karen Mallary, who both selected and illustrated the flowers for the entire series.

The Bluets flower is a delicate perennial wildflower native to the eastern United States and Canada. Its tiny, showy flowers, typically pale blue or white with a distinctive yellow "bull's-eye" center, appear in mid-spring and float on slender, often unbranched, stems that grow 6–8 inches high. The foliage consists of a basal rosette of spatula-shaped leaves, with smaller leaves appearing in opposite pairs higher up the stem. Bluets often form striking, compact tufts or cover broad patches, creating a lovely "carpet" of flowers in open areas. This wildflower thrives in moist, slightly acidic soils and is commonly found in open habitats like meadows, glades, fields, and roadsides. It also grows well in open woods and along the edges of forests, often intermingling with mosses or sparsely vegetated grassy areas where there is little competition from other plants.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Nicknamed "Quaker ladies" because their simple, four-petaled shape resembles the hats once worn by Quaker women, Bluets symbolize modesty, humility, and simplicity. The flower's delicate beauty and association with unassuming grace connect it to the spiritual qualities of innocence and purity. When blooming in vast patches, Bluets bring a sense of serenity and peace to their natural environment, often inspiring a feeling of tranquility and contentment. Native American cultures, such as the Cherokee and Iroquois, historically used Bluets in purification rituals and Thanksgiving ceremonies, believing they represented spiritual enlightenment and harmony. In Feng Shui, the flower is also associated with promoting balance and a calm energy flow in a space.

SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
