STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: Issued on October 28, 1988, in San Francisco, California, this 20-cent definitive stamp celebrates the cable cars that transformed urban travel during the late nineteenth century. The finely engraved design depicts an 1880s cable car with an open canopy, decorative panels, and distinctive running gear. Stamp designer Dan Romano developed the artwork using historical photographs supplied by San Francisco's Cable Car Museum. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produced the stamp in blue-violet ink using intaglio engraving, with vertical perforations for dispensing from coils. The stamp originally served an additional-ounce First-Class Mail postage rate and remains valid toward current USPS postage.
ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO CABLE CARS: San Francisco's famous cable car system began passenger operations in 1873, when inventor Andrew Smith Hallidie introduced the Clay Street Hill Railroad. Unlike horse-drawn streetcars, cable cars were propelled by gripping a continuously moving underground cable, allowing them to climb the city's steep hills more reliably. During the late nineteenth century, cable cars became an important form of urban transportation and helped shape the character of San Francisco. Today, surviving lines remain an internationally recognized symbol of the city and its transportation heritage.
THE 1880s CABLE CAR DESIGN: The stamp depicts a historic dummy car, a type of cable car that carried the gripman and passengers while pulling an accompanying trailer. Its open canopy, exposed operating structure, and decorative bodywork reflect the engineering and craftsmanship of nineteenth-century transit vehicles. The engraved linework gives the design the appearance of a carefully detailed historical illustration, emphasizing the mechanical features and distinctive silhouette of early cable cars.
CABLE CARS & CALIFORNIA HISTORY: Cable cars became closely associated with San Francisco's growth as a major Pacific Coast city during the late nineteenth century. As neighborhoods expanded across its steep terrain, cable railways connected residential districts, commercial areas, and important destinations. Although electric streetcars and other vehicles eventually replaced many cable car routes, public preservation efforts helped protect the surviving system, making it a lasting emblem of California history, innovation, and urban identity.
SAN FRANCISCO WEDDINGS & VINTAGE STYLE: The stamp's blue-violet engraving complements ivory, cream, navy blue, lavender, silver, black, and vintage-inspired stationery. Its architectural detail and historic subject make it especially appealing for San Francisco weddings, California destination celebrations, Victorian-inspired events, travel correspondence, and city-themed invitations. Whether paired with elegant calligraphy, historic maps, or minimalist envelopes, this stamp offers a distinctive connection to the romance and history of San Francisco.
CABLE CARS & SYMBOLISM: Historic cable cars represent movement, ingenuity, connection, and the changing relationship between people and cities. Their ability to navigate steep hills also suggests persistence, determination, and the rewards of overcoming obstacles. As an enduring San Francisco landmark, the cable car evokes nostalgia, exploration, shared journeys, and the character of a place shaped by generations of travelers and residents.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Cable Car design symbolizes progress, perseverance, adventure, connection, and shared journeys. Its ascent through San Francisco's steep streets suggests overcoming challenges and moving confidently toward new destinations. For wedding invitations, milestone celebrations, and meaningful correspondence, this stamp conveys the excitement of new beginnings, the importance of traveling together, and the enduring value of history and human ingenuity.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS introduced the Transportation series in 1981 to celebrate vehicles and technologies that shaped American travel, commerce, and communication. Issued primarily as definitive coil stamps, the series featured subjects ranging from horse-drawn vehicles and early automobiles to boats, trains, and specialized forms of transportation. The designs used detailed engravings that recalled traditional American postage art while illustrating developments in transportation history. The series continued through 1995 and became one of the most extensive definitive stamp programs issued by the United States Postal Service.
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
GUMMED STAMPS: Postage stamps with a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
