STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2017 Christmas Carols issue consists of four coordinated Forever stamps celebrating “Deck the Halls,” “Silent Night,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.” Artist Steve McCracken created original artwork interpreting a central theme from each song, while Howard E. Paine served as art director, designer, and typographer. Deck the Halls uses decorated Christmas cookies to evoke festive preparations; Silent Night presents a lamb beneath a peaceful evening sky; Jingle Bells depicts a horse-drawn sleigh traveling through a snowy winter scene; and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas features Santa Claus with a child. Familiar words from each carol appear within the designs, linking the illustrations directly to their musical inspiration. Issued on October 5, 2017, in New York City, the self-adhesive stamps were printed by Banknote Corporation of America using offset printing and released in double-sided booklets of 20 containing five examples of each design.
