It was notable as the first self-adhesive Christmas stamp released by the U.S. Postal Service.The design is based on an antique greeting-card illustration from around 1910, originally printed by an unknown company. In adapting the image for the stamp, the figure of the angel was mirror-reversed (flipped) from the original design to face left.
