STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1982 Connecticut State Bird and Flower stamp was issued as part of the State Birds and Flowers se-tenant pane of 50 stamps, with one design representing each U.S. state. The Connecticut stamp features a watercolor illustration of an American Robin paired with Mountain Laurel, Connecticut’s official state bird and flower. The pane was issued on April 14, 1982, in Washington, DC, and in state capitals. The artwork was created by father-and-son wildlife artists Arthur and Alan Singer, with Arthur painting the birds and Alan painting the flowers. Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using photogravure, the set became one of the most popular U.S. stamp issues of its time.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The American Robin is a familiar songbird known for its warm reddish-orange breast, gray-brown back, bright eye ring, and cheerful presence in lawns, gardens, woodlands, and suburban landscapes. Closely associated with spring, renewal, and home landscapes across New England, the Robin brings a friendly, seasonal, and regionally meaningful quality to this stamp. It symbolizes hope, joy, new beginnings, attentiveness, and a comforting connection to home.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Mountain Laurel is an evergreen flowering shrub known for its glossy green leaves and clusters of delicate pink or white blossoms. As Connecticut’s state flower, it reflects wooded hillsides, rocky slopes, and classic New England natural beauty. Mountain Laurel is often associated with protection, perseverance, grace, quiet strength, and the enduring beauty of the landscape.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The American Robin evokes springtime, renewal, optimism, devotion, and the warmth of home, while Mountain Laurel symbolizes grace, resilience, protection, beauty, and lasting connection to place. Together, the bird and flower imagery creates a refined New England expression of love, belonging, natural elegance, and fresh beginnings. This stamp is especially fitting for Connecticut weddings, garden celebrations, floral stationery, New England correspondence, graduation announcements, thank you notes, travel mail, and messages celebrating romance, heritage, or meaningful new beginnings.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The State Birds and Flowers issue was a 50-stamp se-tenant pane released in 1982 to celebrate the official birds and flowers of every U.S. state. The project began after Fleetwood commissioned original paintings from father-and-son wildlife artists Arthur and Alan Singer, whose artwork impressed U.S. Postal Service officials. Each stamp featured unique watercolor artwork, making the issue the first set of its size to include original art for every individual stamp. It was the second U.S. sheet of 50 with all different designs and remained among the most popular issues in U.S. postal history.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
