STAMP DESCRIPTION: Issued by the United States Postal Service on April 14, 1982, this 20-cent "Connecticut" stamp from the State Birds & Flowers series features a carefully composed pairing of the state’s official symbols: the American Robin and the Mountain Laurel. At the center of this stamp's design, the American Robin is depicted perched in a natural, alert stance, its warm reddish-orange breast contrasting with its gray-brown back and dark head. Surrounding the bird are clusters of Mountain Laurel blossoms, rendered in soft pink and white tones with distinctive star-shaped markings. The flowers are shown in bloom along leafy green branches, framing the robin and creating a sense of depth and seasonal vitality.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: At its core, the stamp represents renewal, resilience, and the quiet return of life. The American Robin has long been regarded in spiritual and cultural traditions as a messenger of spring—a signal that cycles of hardship, dormancy, or emotional winter are giving way to renewal. Its vivid red breast is often associated with vitality, heart energy, and emotional awakening, symbolizing a re-engagement with life, purpose, and joy. The Mountain Laurel, with its intricate, star-like blossoms, introduces a complementary layer of meaning tied to endurance and protection. As a plant that thrives in rocky, wooded environments, it represents the ability to flourish in difficult conditions, while its clustered blooms suggest unity, interconnectedness, and quiet strength in community. Spiritually, it is often interpreted as a symbol of inner stability and grace under pressure. Together, the bird and flower form a unified message: renewal supported by resilience. The robin announces change and forward movement, while the mountain laurel grounds that change in strength and continuity.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: Issued on April 14, 1982, in Washington, D.C. and at each state capital, the 1982 20-cent "State Birds & Flowers" stamp series was a 50-stamp se-tenant pane showcasing watercolor paintings by father-son team, Arthur and Alan Singer. Originally commissioned for a private company, the popular, unique designs, each representing one U.S. state through its officially designated state bird and state flower, became the most sought-after U.S. postal issue at the time.

In 1978, the Fleetwood Company hired artists Arthur Singer and his son Alan to create the paintings. Arthur Singer painted the birds, while his son, Alan, painted the flowers, with the project taking over a year to complete. Arthur's contribution is central to the series’ identity: each bird is rendered with careful anatomical accuracy and natural posture, while the accompanying flower is integrated into the composition to create a balanced, state-specific vignette. The result is a cohesive yet highly varied collection that blends scientific illustration with decorative design.

Impressed by the high-quality artwork, U.S. Postal Service officials decided to issue them as a 50-stamp set, making it the first series of its size to feature a unique design for every stamp. Despite sharing the same bird (e.g. Cardinal) and flower (e.g. Flowering Dogwood), North Carolina and Virginia each received their own original watercolor representation.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
