STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1935 Connecticut Tercentenary stamp features the Charter Oak, the legendary Hartford tree associated with the preservation of Connecticut’s original colonial charter. According to tradition, the charter was hidden in the tree to keep it from being seized by Sir Edmund Andros, the royal governor sent by King James II. Issued to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Connecticut’s settlement, the stamp honors the state’s colonial origins, political independence, and enduring New England identity. The stamp was issued on April 26, 1935, in Hartford, Connecticut.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Charter Oak symbolizes protection, liberty, endurance, rootedness, and the safeguarding of cherished principles. As a tree tied to colonial self-government and resistance to outside control, it gives this stamp a strong sense of independence, heritage, and quiet strength. This design is especially fitting for Connecticut weddings, New England correspondence, graduation announcements, patriotic mailings, thank you notes, and messages celebrating roots, resilience, legacy, or meaningful beginnings.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Connecticut Tercentenary stamp was issued in 1935 to mark 300 years since the settlement of Connecticut. It belongs to the USPS tradition of commemorating major state and regional anniversaries through postage, using symbolic landmarks and historical imagery to tell a compact story of place. The issue highlights the Charter Oak, one of Connecticut’s most enduring historical symbols, and was released in Hartford, the city most closely associated with the tree and its legend.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
