STAMP HISTORY: The 1972 8¢ “Santa” postage stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service on October 18, 1972, in North Pole, Alaska, as part of the annual "Contemporary Christmas" series. It was the second U.S. Christmas stamp to feature Santa Claus and it quickly became one of the most popular and beloved holiday stamps of the decade.

The design, created by Stevan Dohanos—a renowned American illustrator and longtime U.S. stamp designer—was adapted from a vintage 19th-century Santa engraving by Thomas Nast, the German-born American artist who helped define the modern image of Santa Claus in the late 1800s. Nast’s portrayal of Santa, originally published in Harper’s Weekly, combined European folk traditions with American warmth, creating the familiar image of the jolly, bearded man in red who delivers gifts on Christmas Eve.

For the 1972 stamp, Dohanos reinterpreted Nast’s artwork to suit the small scale of a postage stamp, depicting Santa’s face in close-up—rosy-cheeked, white-bearded, and smiling kindly, his red cap trimmed in white fur. The background is a deep, festive green, and the words “U.S. Postage 8¢” appear in white along the bottom. The design is simple yet full of personality, capturing both the nostalgia of Victorian Christmas imagery and the universal joy associated with Santa’s enduring presence.

The first-day ceremony in North Pole, Alaska, added a playful and memorable touch to the stamp’s debut. The town’s name made it a natural and symbolic choice for a Santa-themed issue, and the event drew wide public attention and enthusiastic participation from families and collectors alike.

Culturally, the 1972 “Santa” stamp appeared at a time when the U.S. was embracing nostalgia for traditional Americana and folk imagery. Santa Claus—by then deeply woven into both secular and religious celebrations—served as a figure of generosity, warmth, and joy that transcended boundaries of creed and age. Dohanos’s design, though rooted in 19th-century art, carried a timeless quality that resonated across generations.

The Santa stamp was so popular that it was reprinted in large quantities and widely used throughout the 1972 holiday season. It remains one of the most collected U.S. Christmas stamps, cherished for its cheerful spirit and classic charm Today, the “Santa” stands as a hallmark of American holiday philately—a bridge between old-world Christmas tradition and modern-day celebration. Through the twinkle in Santa’s eye and the warmth of his smile, it captured not only the magic of the holiday but also the enduring human longing for generosity, wonder, and joy shared freely with others.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The “Santa” stamp symbolizes the divine joy of giving and the sacred power of kindness. Though secular in form, Santa’s warm, smiling face represents the spirit of selfless generosity—the same compassion embodied by Saint Nicholas, whose quiet acts of charity inspired the legend. His red suit and white beard echo timeless symbols of love, purity, and light, reminding us that giving from the heart is a holy act.

The Postal Service captured not just holiday cheer but a deeper truth: that the spirit of Christmas lives wherever love is shared, joy is offered, and light is carried into the dark. Santa’s gentle gaze invites us to see generosity itself as sacred—to recognize that in giving freely, we participate in the divine work of spreading warmth, hope, and grace to others.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
