STAMP HISTORY: The 1988 25-cent “Sleigh & Village Scene” stamp is a U.S. Christmas-themed issue in the “Contemporary Christmas” series. Its first day of issue was October 20, 1988, in Berlin, New Hampshire. The design portrays a quietly snowy village and a horse-drawn sleigh in front of a house surrounded by evergreens, capturing a peaceful, nostalgia-tinged winter scene. The imagery evokes the “White Christmas” ideal during the holiday season.

Interestingly, though the stamp design does not explicitly depict him, it is unofficially associated with Irving Berlin, the composer of the song “White Christmas.” Berlin celebrated his 100th birthday in 1988, and the stamp’s winter imagery was intended to allude to his famous song. Because U.S. Postal Service policy generally prohibited honoring living individuals other than presidents, the tribute was made indirectly — by issuing the winter scene from Berlin, New Hampshire — effectively making this stamp one of the very few U.S. issues that subtly honored a living person.

Over time, the “Sleigh & Village Scene” stamp has become a beloved classic in U.S. holiday philately, prized for its evocative simplicity, its connection to “White Christmas”, and for representing a moment when art, nostalgia, and postal design converged in a widely shared seasonal icon.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 1988 25-cent “Sleigh & Village Scene” stamp carries a beautifully layered spiritual significance, one rooted in peace, togetherness, and the enduring warmth of the human spirit amid life’s coldest seasons. Though created as a holiday issue, its quiet image of a horse-drawn sleigh gliding through a snow-covered village speaks to something deeper than festivity — it embodies harmony between nature and humanity, motion and stillness, community and solitude.

The sleigh, moving steadily through the snow, represents life’s spiritual journey — the passage of the soul through time, guided by faith and companionship. Its gentle movement through the serene landscape mirrors the soul’s progress toward light, even when the world lies hushed and cold. The horse, a symbol of strength and grace, suggests that spiritual power need not be forceful; it can be steady, grounded, and guided by trust. The snow itself — pure, still, and reflective — conveys cleansing, renewal, and the quiet presence of the divine that blankets the world when we pause long enough to notice it.

The setting of the stamp — a simple, timeless village scene — evokes a sense of nostalgia and spiritual grounding, reminding us of eternal values: simplicity, kindness, and gratitude. It calls the observer back to the essence of the season — not material abundance, but peace, stillness, and presence. The snow-covered path is not just a road through a village, but a metaphorical road through life, inviting contemplation of where we have come from, where we are going, and who travels beside us.

The “Sleigh & Village Scene” stamp is a quiet spiritual icon in miniature — a meditation on movement through serenity, light within stillness, and the beauty of connection. It reminds us that the sacred is found not only in churches or rituals, but in the gentle rhythms of everyday life: in shared journeys, warm homes, and the peaceful grace of a winter night.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces.
