STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: A small cottontail rabbit resting against a snowy landscape gives this 2020 Forever stamp its gentle winter character. USPS issued the Winter Scenes stamps on October 16, 2020, in Winter Park, Florida, as a booklet of 20 containing 10 photographic designs. Art director and designer Derry Noyes selected existing photography featuring snowy landscapes, winter wildlife, barns, trees, and seasonal outdoor scenes. Ashton Potter (USA) Ltd. printed the self-adhesive issue using offset lithography.
ABOUT THE COTTONTAIL RABBIT: Cottontail rabbits are among the most familiar wild mammals in North America. Named for the fluffy white underside of the tail that resembles a tuft of cotton, these rabbits inhabit meadows, fields, brushy edges, woodland borders, gardens, and suburban landscapes. Their large eyes, upright ears, and compact form make them instantly recognizable and especially appealing wildlife subjects.
COTTONTAIL RABBITS IN WINTER: Unlike animals that hibernate through the coldest months, cottontail rabbits remain active throughout winter. As fresh grasses and leafy plants become scarce, they shift their diet toward twigs, bark, buds, and other available vegetation. Their distinctive tracks are often among the easiest signs of wildlife to spot after a fresh snowfall.
WINTER WILDLIFE & HOLIDAY STYLE: White snow dominates this design, surrounding the rabbit’s warm brown fur with subtle gray and cool blue tones. The neutral winter palette pairs naturally with white, ivory, kraft paper, evergreen, soft blue, brown, silver, and woodland-inspired holiday stationery. For Christmas cards with rustic, cottage, woodland, Scandinavian, wildlife, or nature-focused styling, this stamp adds a warm and playful detail without feeling overly formal.
RABBITS & WINTER TRADITIONS: Finding rabbit tracks crossing fresh snow is one of the small pleasures of winter in many parts of the country. Backyard sightings, snowy woodland walks, and quiet encounters with wildlife often become part of the seasonal memories associated with colder months, cabins, family gatherings, and time spent outdoors.
RABBITS & SYMBOLISM: Rabbits have long been associated with gentleness, abundance, renewal, alertness, fertility, and new beginnings. Their quiet presence and ability to thrive close to both wild and human landscapes give them additional associations with adaptability, comfort, and home.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Cottontail Rabbit design symbolizes gentleness, awareness, resilience, renewal, warmth, and quiet joy. The small rabbit surrounded by winter snow suggests finding life and comfort even during the coldest season. For Christmas cards and meaningful winter correspondence, this stamp conveys a sense of peace, home, natural beauty, and appreciation for simple seasonal moments.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS issued Winter Scenes in 2020 as a 10-design Forever stamp booklet celebrating the beauty and serenity of snowy seasonal landscapes. Five designs featured winter wildlife, while the remaining photographs highlighted barns, snowy trees, a woodland road, and horses pulling a sleigh. The coordinated photographs present winter not simply as a season of cold weather, but as a landscape filled with color, wildlife, activity, and quiet beauty.
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
