STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: This vintage 1996 Crocus stamp features a low-growing purple crocus bloom with slender green foliage, illustrated as part of a continuous garden scene in the Winter Garden Flowers booklet. The flower appears close to the ground, reflecting the set’s shared design detail of showing winter-hardy blooms growing from visible garden soil. Issued as one of five 32-cent Winter Garden Flowers stamps, the Crocus stamp was part of the final booklet in the Garden Flowers series. The booklet was first issued on January 19, 1996, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, with the stamps dedicated at Longwood Gardens. The series was designed by nature artist Ned Seidler, who created a single watercolor garden scene used across the five-stamp set.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Crocuses are low-growing perennial flowers in the iris family, known for cup-shaped blossoms that often appear in purple, white, yellow, orange, or lilac tones. Many crocuses bloom in late winter or early spring, making them beloved signs of seasonal renewal after cold weather. Crocuses are native across a broad region that includes the Mediterranean, North Africa, central and southern Europe, the Aegean islands, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia. They grow in varied habitats including meadows, woodland edges, scrub, and rocky slopes with good drainage. The crocus genus is also historically associated with saffron, which comes from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Crocus flowers are often associated with renewal, hope, awakening, and the quiet return of beauty after winter. Because crocuses are among the first flowers to appear in cold-season gardens, they carry a gentle symbolism of resilience, optimism, and new beginnings. On mail, this stamp brings a graceful message of encouragement, fresh starts, and thoughtful beauty.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Garden Flowers series began in 1993 and celebrated seasonal garden blooms across a sequence of USPS booklet issues. The Winter Garden Flowers booklet was the final release in the series and featured five winter-blooming or winter-hardy flowers: crocus, winter aconite, pansy, snowdrop, and anemone. The final booklet was issued on January 19, 1996, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. The stamps were designed by Ned Seidler, a nature artist known for his work with National Geographic, who created the watercolor artwork for the se-tenant garden scene.
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
