STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1991 Fawn stamp was issued as part of the USPS Flora & Fauna definitive series and depicts a young white-tailed deer standing on its delicate legs. Bureau of Engraving and Printing artist Peter Cocci created the image using acrylic paints, giving this stamp a realistic yet gentle wildlife character. Issued on March 11, 1991, in Washington, D.C., this 19-cent stamp was created to meet the newly established postcard rate and was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using photogravure.

ABOUT WHITE-TAILED DEER: White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are among the most widespread and recognizable mammals in North America. Named for the bright white underside of their tails, which they raise as an alarm signal when startled, white-tailed deer inhabit forests, grasslands, agricultural areas, and suburban landscapes. Their adaptability has allowed them to thrive across much of the United States.

ABOUT FAWNS: Fawns are young deer, typically born in late spring or early summer. Their reddish-brown coats are marked with distinctive white spots that help camouflage them among leaves, grasses, and dappled woodland light. During their earliest weeks, fawns often remain still and hidden while their mothers forage nearby. Their small size, spotted coats, and tentative movements have made them enduring symbols of innocence, gentleness, and new life.

WOODLAND & FOREST THEMES: Deer are closely associated with forests, quiet meadows, mountain landscapes, and rustic outdoor settings. Their graceful appearance makes them especially fitting for woodland weddings, nature-inspired celebrations, cabin and mountain themes, baby announcements, and correspondence centered on the outdoors. This stamp’s soft wildlife imagery pairs naturally with botanical, evergreen, floral, and landscape postage.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Fawn design symbolizes innocence, gentleness, sensitivity, renewal, grace, new beginnings, and connection with nature. A young deer often represents vulnerability paired with quiet strength, while its woodland setting evokes peace and harmony with the natural world. For weddings, birth announcements, and meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses tenderness, growth, and the beginning of a new chapter.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The USPS Flora & Fauna series began in 1990 as a long-running definitive series featuring American plants, birds, mammals, fish, insects, fruits, and other natural subjects. Earlier in its history, the group was often referred to as the Wildlife series before USPS adopted the broader Flora & Fauna name. The series eventually included dozens of face-different designs issued in multiple denominations and formats through 2001. Scott 2479 represents the 19-cent Fawn design, created specifically to satisfy the 1991 postcard rate.
