STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1988 Georgia Statehood stamp features a watercolor image of a live oak tree draped with Spanish moss, with a faint modern Atlanta skyline in the background. Designed by Georgia native Greg Harlin, the stamp honored the 200th anniversary of Georgia’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Georgia became the fourth state on January 2, 1788, and this commemorative stamp was issued on January 6, 1988, in Atlanta, Georgia, as the fourth stamp in the Bicentenary Statehood series.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Bicentenary Statehood series honored the 200th anniversaries of statehood for the original 13 states. Issued from 1987 through 1990, the stamps appeared in the order in which the former colonies ratified the U.S. Constitution, with each design featuring symbols, scenery, or historic imagery associated with the state. The Georgia stamp was the fourth stamp in the series. It was printed by the American Bank Note Company in panes of 50 within sheets of 200 using lithographed, engraved, and photogravure methods.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
