STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1994 Gladiola stamp features a tall, striking floral design with warm red-orange gladiola blossoms and green foliage, creating a dramatic summer garden appearance. Issued as part of the five-stamp Summer Garden Flowers booklet, this stamp was one of the bright floral designs created to appeal to everyday mailers while fulfilling the then-current 29-cent first-class postage rate. The stamp was first issued on April 28, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, Flower and Garden Show. The artwork was designed by artist Ned Seidler, who also created the 1993 garden flower stamps, and the stamp was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Gladiolus flowers, often called gladiolas or sword lilies, are known for their tall flower spikes, long sword-like leaves, and large blossoms that grow in clusters along the stem. The name gladiolus comes from the Latin word meaning “little sword,” a reference to the plant’s distinctive leaves. Gladiolus flowers are widely cultivated as garden and cut flowers, and their blossoms appear in a wide range of colors, including red, orange, white, pink, yellow, purple, and green. Many species are native to southern Africa, with additional species occurring in parts of Europe, the Mediterranean, and western Asia. Their height, vivid colors, and long-lasting blooms make them a favorite for gardens, floral arrangements, and ceremonial bouquets.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Gladiolas often symbolize strength of character, sincerity, remembrance, faithfulness, and moral integrity. Their tall, upright form gives them a dignified and confident presence, making this stamp especially fitting for congratulations cards, milestone celebrations, thank you notes, sympathy mail, and heartfelt personal correspondence. The warm red-orange floral design adds energy, courage, and affection to any mailing.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Summer Garden Flowers booklet was the second seasonal installment in the Garden Flowers series, following the Spring Garden Flowers booklet issued in 1993. First issued on April 28, 1994, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Summer Garden Flowers set featured lily, zinnia, gladiola, marigold, and rose designs arranged as a connected bouquet. The series was created to offer bright floral stamps with strong public appeal for everyday mailing use. The booklet was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using lithographed and engraved methods, and the artwork was designed by artist Ned Seidler.
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
