STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: Issued on September 10, 1998, in Cleveland, Ohio, this 32-cent commemorative stamp honors the construction and 1937 opening of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. The illustration by Paul Calle depicts a towering International Orange support structure, suspended cables, and an unfinished roadway extending above the blue waters of the Golden Gate Strait. Part of the Celebrate the Century pane commemorating the 1930s, this stamp recalls one of the era's most extraordinary engineering achievements. Designed as part of the series by Howard Paine, the stamp was printed by Ashton-Potter (USA) using offset and intaglio processes.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate Strait, connecting San Francisco with Marin County at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Construction began in 1933, and the bridge opened to pedestrians on May 27, 1937, followed by vehicular traffic on May 28. With a main suspension span measuring 4,200 feet, it was the world's longest suspension bridge at the time of its completion. Its distinctive International Orange color, soaring towers, graceful cables, and dramatic coastal setting have made it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: Building the Golden Gate Bridge required extraordinary engineering in an environment known for strong currents, fog, wind, and deep water. Chief engineer Joseph Strauss led the project with major contributions from engineers Charles Alton Ellis and Leon Moisseiff, while architect Irving Morrow helped shape the bridge's celebrated Art Deco character and color scheme. Construction proceeded during the Great Depression and became a powerful symbol of technological ambition and public works achievement. A safety net beneath the bridge saved 19 workers who became known as the Halfway to Hell Club, although construction also claimed workers' lives.

INTERNATIONAL ORANGE & ART DECO DESIGN: The bridge's International Orange finish distinguishes it from the neutral grays commonly associated with large steel structures. Selected for its visibility and its harmony with the surrounding coastal landscape, the color creates a striking contrast against blue water, green hillsides, and fog. The bridge's stepped towers, vertical lines, and carefully considered architectural details reflect the influence of Art Deco design, giving its engineering structure a distinctive artistic identity.

SAN FRANCISCO & CALIFORNIA HISTORY: The Golden Gate Bridge transformed transportation between San Francisco and communities north of the Golden Gate Strait, replacing much of the dependence on ferry crossings. Its completion strengthened connections throughout the Bay Area and helped establish the bridge as a symbol of California's modern identity. Today, it remains an internationally recognized destination associated with the city's dramatic landscape, engineering heritage, and distinctive Pacific Coast character.

SAN FRANCISCO WEDDINGS & VINTAGE STYLE: The stamp's pale blue sky and water create a bright background for the bridge's orange towers and cables, complemented by green hills and white details. This palette pairs beautifully with ivory, navy blue, dusty blue, terracotta, coral, sage green, and classic wedding stationery. For San Francisco weddings, Bay Area celebrations, California destination events, or couples with a personal connection to the Golden Gate Bridge, this stamp adds a romantic sense of place and architectural distinction.

BRIDGES & SYMBOLISM: Bridges have long represented connection, transition, cooperation, and the ability to overcome distance. The Golden Gate Bridge is particularly associated with determination, human ingenuity, and ambitious achievements once considered impossible. Its span between two shores offers a meaningful image of relationships, shared destinations, and the ways people build connections across differences and challenges.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Golden Gate Bridge design symbolizes connection, commitment, perseverance, ambition, unity, and new beginnings. Its towering structure and sweeping cables suggest strength and stability, while the bridge's journey from construction to completion reflects patience, cooperation, and lasting achievement. For wedding invitations, anniversaries, and meaningful correspondence, this stamp conveys the beauty of coming together, building a shared future, and creating bonds that endure.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS introduced Celebrate the Century in 1998 to commemorate defining people, events, inventions, and cultural milestones of the twentieth century. The program consisted of ten commemorative panes representing the decades from the 1900s through the 1990s, with 15 designs per pane for a total of 150 stamps. The 1930s pane, issued in September 1998, highlighted subjects including Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, Jesse Owens, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the hardships of the Great Depression. Designed by Howard Paine and illustrated by Paul Calle, the series offered a richly varied visual history of American life and culture.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.

GUMMED STAMPS: Postage stamps with a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
