STAMP DESCRIPTION: The "Hawaii" postage stamp is part of the "State Birds & Flowers" issue, released on April 14, 1982. It features a watercolor depiction of Hawaii’s state bird, the Nēnē (Hawaiian goose), paired with the state flower, the Ōlena (yellow hibiscus). The artwork was created by the Father-Son team Arthur and Alan Singer: Arthur painted the bird and Alan painted the flower. This series was notable because every stamp in it was produced from original art—not just variations on a standard layout.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Hawaii’s state bird, the Nēnē (Hawaiian Goose), and its state flower, the Yellow Hibiscus (ʻŌlena or Pua Aloalo), share a deeply intertwined spiritual significance that reflects the islands’ essence of balance, resilience, and sacred harmony with nature. The yellow hibiscus, with its radiant golden petals, symbolizes joy, transformation, and divine energy. Its color connects to the solar chakra, representing vitality and confidence, while its brief blooming period serves as a gentle reminder of the impermanence and preciousness of life’s most beautiful moments. Spiritually, it embodies the Hawaiian ideal of aloha — love, openness, and gratitude — and expresses the strength that comes from grace and renewal.

The Nēnē, Hawaii’s beloved and once-endangered goose, represents endurance, protection, and spiritual guardianship. As a bird that moves fluidly between land and sky, it symbolizes the bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms, guiding souls to remain grounded yet open to divine wisdom. Its survival story mirrors the Hawaiian belief in rebirth and the resilience of the spirit, a living expression of perseverance and sacred responsibility to the land.

Together, the Nēnē and yellow hibiscus convey a message of harmony between heaven and earth. The hibiscus blooms under the nurturing sun, while the Nēnē soars above the volcanic plains — one rooted in the soil, the other lifted by the winds. Spiritually, their pairing reminds us to live with balance, reverence, and compassion — to honor both our earthly responsibilities and our higher spiritual nature. In their union, they embody the heart of Hawaii’s spiritual identity: to live each day with aloha, in grace, gratitude, and harmony with all that exists.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: Issued on April 14, 1982, in Washington, D.C. and at each state capital, the 1982 20-cent "State Birds & Flowers" stamp series was a 50-stamp se-tenant pane showcasing watercolor paintings by father-son team, Arthur and Alan Singer. Originally commissioned for a private company, the popular, unique designs, each representing one U.S. state through its officially designated state bird and state flower, became the most sought-after U.S. postal issue at the time.

In 1978, the Fleetwood Company hired artists Arthur Singer and his son Alan to create the paintings. Arthur Singer painted the birds, while his son, Alan, painted the flowers, with the project taking over a year to complete. Arthur's contribution is central to the series’ identity: each bird is rendered with careful anatomical accuracy and natural posture, while the accompanying flower is integrated into the composition to create a balanced, state-specific vignette. The result is a cohesive yet highly varied collection that blends scientific illustration with decorative design.

Impressed by the high-quality artwork, U.S. Postal Service officials decided to issue them as a 50-stamp set, making it the first series of its size to feature a unique design for every stamp. Despite sharing the same bird (e.g. Cardinal) and flower (e.g. Flowering Dogwood), North Carolina and Virginia each received their own original watercolor representation.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
