STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1959 Hawaii Statehood airmail stamp features a Hawaiian Aliʻi, or chief, extending a lei of welcome, with a map of the Hawaiian Islands and a star symbolizing statehood. Issued to commemorate Hawaii’s admission as the 50th state, this rose-red 7-cent airmail stamp honors Hawaii’s Pacific heritage, island identity, and historic entry into the Union. Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959, and this commemorative airmail stamp was issued the same day in Honolulu, Hawaii.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The lei is a powerful Hawaiian symbol of welcome, affection, honor, celebration, and connection. The Aliʻi (Chief/King) figure evokes leadership, cultural heritage, dignity, and respect, while the star represents Hawaii’s new place in the United States as the 50th state. Together, these elements make this stamp especially meaningful for Hawaii weddings, destination celebrations, travel correspondence, graduation announcements, thank you notes, and messages celebrating welcome, belonging, new beginnings, or a meaningful journey.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Hawaii Statehood airmail stamp was issued in 1959 as part of the U.S. airmail stamp tradition, which used “C” Scott numbers for airmail issues. The stamp marked Hawaii’s admission to the Union and reflected the importance of air routes in connecting the island state with the continental United States and the broader Pacific. Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using rotary press production, the stamp was issued in a distinctive rose-red color.
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
