STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1984 Hawaii Statehood stamp features a traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe on blue ocean water, a golden plover flying overhead, and an erupting volcano on the flank of Mauna Loa in the background. Issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Hawaii’s admission to the Union, the stamp honors Hawaii’s Pacific heritage, navigation traditions, volcanic landscape, and identity as the 50th state. Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959, and this commemorative stamp was issued on March 12, 1984, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The artwork was created by Hawaii native Herb Kāne and modeled by Richard C. Sennett.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Polynesian canoe symbolizes voyage, exploration, courage, ancestry, and connection across the ocean. The golden plover evokes migration, safe passage, instinct, and return, while the erupting volcano represents creation, power, transformation, and the living landscape of Hawaii. Together, these elements make this stamp especially meaningful for destination weddings, nautical celebrations, travel correspondence, graduation announcements, thank you notes, and messages celebrating adventure, heritage, new beginnings, or a meaningful journey.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Hawaii Statehood stamp was issued in 1984 to mark the silver jubilee, or 25th anniversary, of Hawaii becoming the 50th state. While not part of the later Bicentenary Statehood series for the original 13 states, it belongs to the USPS tradition of commemorating important statehood anniversaries and regional identity through postage. The design highlights three principal symbols of Hawaii: a golden plover in flight, an Eastern Polynesian voyaging canoe, and an eruption on Mauna Loa. The stamp was issued in Honolulu and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using lithographed and engraved methods.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
