STAMP HISTORY: This 41c Bear postage stamp, part of the “Holiday Knits” set, was a Contemporary Christmas issue released on October 25, 2007, in New York, New York, as part of a set of four stamps. Inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and Christmas stockings, this cozy stamp features a nostalgic brown teddy bear, designed to look like a machine-knitted winter pattern.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 2007 “Holiday Knits” Bear postage stamp holds significant cultural and spiritual meaning, symbolizing themes of comfort, protection, childhood innocence, and the balance of strength and softness. Its knitted appearance adds a nostalgic and "cozy" element, linking the stamp to handmade holiday traditions and the warmth of the season. The teddy bear is a universal symbol of childhood, representing innocence, love, and a loyal, steadfast companion. The stamp's design evokes the feeling of a cherished childhood toy placed under a Christmas tree, ready to be hugged. Teddy bears often serve as comfort objects, offering emotional support and a sense of security, especially during times of stress or loneliness. The stamp's soft, knitted look reinforces this feeling of warmth and reassurance. The bear as a symbol uniquely holds space for both strength and gentleness, embodying courage and protection while also representing peace and comfort. The stamp's style, inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and knitted stockings, connects with the nostalgia of handmade crafts and the joy of creating warm, personal gifts during the holidays. In many Native American traditions, the bear is seen as a sacred guardian and spiritual healer. In this context, the teddy bear can symbolize protection against negative influences and emotional healing. The bear's habit of hibernation can be interpreted spiritually as a symbol of going inward for rest, self-reflection, and gaining wisdom before re-emerging stronger. The stamp can thus serve as a gentle reminder to take time for personal renewal during the busy holiday season. The enduring nature of teddy bears and the unconditional love they often represent can be seen as a spiritual message of enduring affection and the comfort of divine love. As a powerful animal totem in various cultures, the bear is associated with rebirth and the strength to face challenges, mirroring the sense of hope and new beginnings that the holidays often represent.
SERIES HISTORY: The 2007 “Holiday Knits” stamps are part of the United States Postal Service's (USPS) annual series of contemporary holiday-themed postage stamps. The se-tenant set of four classic wintertime images — a stag, an evergreen tree, a snowman, and a teddy bear — was designed by nationally known illustrator Nancy Stahl. Inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters and Christmas stockings, Stahl used a computer program to create the designs, converted the images to stitches, and then used a knitting machine to make the actual pieces, which were then photographed for the final stamp designs. The stamps made their debut at a first-day-of-issue ceremony on Thursday, October 25, at the 2007 American Stamp Dealers Association's Postage Stamp Mega-Event at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
