STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1993 29-cent Iris stamp features a graceful purple iris blossom with green foliage and yellow accents, presented as part of the Spring Garden Flowers booklet design. The stamp’s floral illustration gives the piece a soft, garden-inspired look, making it especially appealing for romantic, botanical, and spring-themed correspondence. Issued on May 15, 1993, in Spokane, Washington, this stamp belongs to the 1993 Garden Flowers set, which featured five favorite garden flowers: hyacinth, daffodil, tulip, iris, and lilac.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Irises are elegant flowering plants known for their showy, sculptural blooms, often with upright petals and cascading “falls” that create their distinctive layered shape. The genus Iris includes many species found primarily throughout temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Irises grow in a wide variety of habitats, from meadows and grassy slopes to riverbanks, bogs, woodland edges, rocky mountain regions, and cultivated gardens. Their name is commonly associated with the Greek word for rainbow, reflecting the wide range of colors found across iris varieties.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The iris is often associated with wisdom, faith, hope, renewal, and meaningful communication. Its graceful form and vivid color make it a fitting symbol for heartfelt messages, new beginnings, admiration, and remembrance. On mail, the Iris postage stamp brings a refined garden sentiment to invitations, announcements, thank you notes, and keepsake correspondence.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Spring Garden Flowers stamps were issued on May 15, 1993, in Spokane, Washington, as the first booklet in a seasonal Garden Flowers series. The booklet featured five 29-cent floral stamps—Hyacinth, Daffodil, Tulip, Iris, and Lilac—arranged as a continuous bouquet. The series grew out of USPS interest in bright, attractive flower stamps for everyday mail, especially as stamps were increasingly sold through supermarkets and other retail locations. Artwork for the Spring Garden Flowers booklet was created by Ned Seidler, with engraving by Richard Everett, and the booklet was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using lithography and engraving.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
