STAMP HISTORY: This stamp, issued September 6, 1957, commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Marquis de Lafayette (Gilbert du Motier), the French aristocrat and military officer who played a key role in the American Revolution. To honor the occasion, the United States Post Office held first-day ceremonies in three different locations: Easton, Pennsylvania (home of Lafayette College), Fayetteville, North Carolina (the first American town to bear his name), and Louisville, Kentucky (which designated that day “Lafayette Day” as part of the state fair). A nationwide Lafayette Bicentennial Committee, with the honorary backing of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, organized related cultural and educational events. The portrait of Lafayette used on this stamp is based on a painting by Joseph Désiré Court, and is flanked decoratively by entwined vines, a flintlock rifle, and a ceremonial sword—the latter being modeled after the one Congress presented to him in gratitude for his service. The inscription “1757 La Fayette 1957” appears above the portrait, and “United States Postage” and “3¢” are placed below.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: This stamp carries a quiet yet profound spiritual significance, extending beyond its commemorative purpose into themes of freedom, loyalty, courage, and unity across nations. Spiritually, it honors not just a man, but the enduring ideal of selfless service in the name of liberty — a principle that transcends time, politics, and geography. Marquis de Lafayette represents the spirit of alliance and moral conviction — a soul who acted out of conscience rather than self-interest. At a young age, he crossed an ocean to fight for freedom that was not his own, embodying a universal spiritual truth: that the liberation of others is inseparable from one’s own. In this way, the Lafayette stamp becomes a symbol of sacred solidarity — the recognition that justice and compassion are shared human duties.
The rose-lake color palette of the stamp adds further resonance. The warm hue suggests nobility of heart, passion tempered by grace, and the lifeblood of sacrifice. The crossed weapons and ornamental vines in the design evoke balance — the merging of strength with peace, action with humility. Lafayette’s calm, resolute expression in the engraving invites reflection on moral courage as a spiritual act, not merely a historical one.
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
