STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1993 29-cent Lilac stamp features a delicate cluster of purple lilac blossoms with green leaves, presented as part of a larger bouquet design across the Spring Garden Flowers booklet pane. The stamp’s floral artwork gives the design a fresh, garden-inspired look, while the black intaglio text identifies the denomination, country, and flower name. Issued on May 15, 1993, in Spokane, Washington, the Spring Garden Flowers stamps were released at the 55th annual Spokane Lilac Festival and International Lilac Society Convention. The series reflected public interest in bright, attractive floral stamps and became the first in a group of seasonal garden flower booklets. The stamp artwork was created by Ned Seidler and engraved by Richard Everett of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Lilacs are beloved flowering shrubs known for their fragrant, clustered blossoms, which commonly appear in shades of lilac, mauve, purple, and white. Common lilac, or Syringa vulgaris, is native to the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, where it grows on rocky hillsides. The plant is widely cultivated in gardens and parks throughout temperate regions, especially for its sweet spring fragrance and ornamental flower panicles. Lilacs are deciduous shrubs or small trees with heart-shaped green leaves, and their blossoms have long been associated with springtime, memory, renewal, and nostalgic beauty.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Lilacs are often associated with renewal, tenderness, memory, and the emotional beauty of spring. Their fragrant blossoms can symbolize first love, fresh beginnings, and the gentle return of warmth after winter. On mail, the lilac stamp brings a soft, romantic, and heartfelt quality, making it especially meaningful for wedding correspondence, spring celebrations, notes of remembrance, and messages filled with affection, gratitude, or hope.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Spring Garden Flowers booklet was issued on May 15, 1993, in Spokane, Washington, at the Spokane Lilac Festival and International Lilac Society Convention. The booklet included five 29-cent garden flower stamps: hyacinth, daffodil, tulip, iris, and lilac. The artwork was created by Ned Seidler, who used photographs and flower books as inspiration and worked in watercolor and gouache. Richard Everett of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing engraved the designs. The Spring Garden Flowers booklet began a seasonal flower booklet concept that continued with later summer, fall, and winter flower issues.
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
