STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1982 Maryland State Bird and Flower stamp was issued as part of the State Birds and Flowers se-tenant pane of 50 stamps, with one design representing each U.S. state. The Maryland stamp features a watercolor illustration of a Baltimore Oriole paired with a Black-Eyed Susan, Maryland’s official state bird and flower. The issue was part of the popular 1982 State Birds and Flowers commemorative pane, which celebrated each state’s natural identity through original bird-and-flower artwork.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Baltimore Oriole is a striking songbird known for the male’s vivid orange body, black head and wings, white wing bars, and graceful tree-top presence. Closely associated with Maryland’s woodlands, orchards, parks, and open landscapes, the Baltimore Oriole brings bold regional color and Chesapeake character to this stamp. It symbolizes joy, vitality, movement, beauty, and a bright connection to home.

FLOWER DESCRIPTION: The Black-Eyed Susan is a cheerful wildflower known for its golden-yellow petals, dark central disk, and sunlit prairie-and-garden appearance. As Maryland’s state flower, it reflects natural warmth, resilience, simplicity, and Mid-Atlantic garden beauty. Its bright yellow blooms are often associated with encouragement, happiness, loyalty, optimism, and affectionate remembrance.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Baltimore Oriole evokes joy, energy, brightness, and a vivid sense of place, while the Black-Eyed Susan symbolizes encouragement, happiness, loyalty, warmth, and resilient affection. Together, the bird and flower imagery creates a distinctly Maryland expression of love, optimism, home, and natural beauty. This stamp is especially fitting for Maryland weddings, Chesapeake celebrations, garden stationery, floral correspondence, graduation announcements, thank you notes, travel mail, and messages celebrating romance, roots, or meaningful new beginnings.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The State Birds and Flowers issue was a 50-stamp se-tenant pane released in 1982 to celebrate the official birds and flowers of every U.S. state. The project began after Fleetwood commissioned original paintings from father-and-son wildlife artists Arthur and Alan Singer, whose artwork impressed U.S. Postal Service officials. Each stamp featured unique watercolor artwork, making the issue the first set of its size to include original art for every individual stamp. It was the second U.S. sheet of 50 with all different designs and remained among the most popular issues in U.S. postal history.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
