STAMP HISTORY: The 1983 20¢ “Metropolitan Opera” postage stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service on September 19, 1983, in New York City, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Metropolitan Opera—one of America’s most prestigious cultural institutions and a symbol of the nation’s artistic maturity.

The Metropolitan Opera Company, often simply called “the Met,” was founded in 1883 by a group of New York businessmen who sought to establish a grand opera house to rival Europe’s finest. Its first performance, Charles Gounod’s Faust, took place on October 22, 1883, at the original opera house on Broadway and 39th Street. Over the next century, the Met became a cornerstone of American performing arts, introducing audiences to some of the world’s greatest voices, composers, and productions. By 1966, it had moved to its current home at Lincoln Center, a modern architectural landmark and a hub of musical excellence.

The stamp design was created by artist Stevan Dohanos, a celebrated American illustrator known for his realistic and human-centered works (and for numerous prior U.S. stamp designs).

The stamp’s release coincided with the Met’s 1983–84 centennial season, which included special productions and retrospectives celebrating a century of American operatic achievement. The centennial also highlighted the Met’s evolution from a society-driven enterprise to a world-class institution that had shaped both American music and international cultural exchange.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 1983 20¢ “Metropolitan Opera” postage stamp honors the sacred union of art, beauty, and the elevation of the human spirit. Though issued to commemorate a cultural milestone—the Met’s centennial—it also captures something timeless and spiritual: the idea that music and performance are not merely entertainment, but expressions of the divine within humanity.

Opera, as an art form, has always carried a deeply spiritual dimension: it embodies the full range of human emotion—love, loss, faith, struggle, redemption—transformed into sound.

Ultimately, the 1983 Metropolitan Opera stamp is a meditation on the divine in art—on the truth that music, like spirit, transcends all boundaries. It celebrates the opera not only as a performance but as a sacred ritual of unity and renewal, where the human voice becomes an echo of the divine voice, and the stage becomes a mirror for the drama of the soul. In this way, the stamp stands as a luminous tribute to the belief that through beauty, humanity remembers its highest nature—and touches the infinite.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
