STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1987 Michigan Statehood stamp features a Michigan white pine tree set before a moonrise (or sunrise) over Lake Huron. Issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Michigan becoming the 26th state, the stamp highlights two defining features of Michigan history and identity: its forests and its Great Lakes waterways. Michigan joined the Union on January 26, 1837, and this commemorative stamp was issued exactly 150 years later on January 26, 1987, in Lansing, Michigan. The design was created by Detroit artist Robert Wilbert.
