STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1982 Minnesota State Bird and Flower stamp was issued as part of the State Birds and Flowers se-tenant pane of 50 stamps, with one design representing each U.S. state. The Minnesota stamp features a watercolor illustration of a Common Loon paired with a Pink and White Lady’s Slipper, Minnesota’s official state bird and flower. The issue was released on April 14, 1982, in Washington, DC, and in state capitals. Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using photogravure, the set showcased original watercolor artwork by father-and-son wildlife artists Arthur and Alan Singer, with Arthur creating the birds and Alan creating the flowers.
BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Common Loon is a striking waterbird known for its black head, checkered black-and-white back, white underparts, red eyes, and haunting call across northern lakes. Closely associated with Minnesota’s lake country and Northwoods landscapes, the loon brings a serene, wilderness-inspired quality to this stamp. It symbolizes peaceful reflection, loyalty, clarity, solitude, and a deep connection to water and home.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: The Pink and White Lady’s Slipper is a distinctive native orchid known for its pouch-shaped bloom, soft pink-and-white coloring, and graceful woodland presence. As Minnesota’s state flower, it reflects the state’s forests, wetlands, and protected natural beauty. Its rare and delicate form is often associated with elegance, tenderness, protection, patience, and cherished affection.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Common Loon evokes peace, fidelity, reflection, wilderness, and a soulful connection to lakes and home, while the Lady’s Slipper symbolizes delicate beauty, rarity, protection, and devoted affection. Together, the bird and flower imagery creates a distinctly Minnesota expression of love, stillness, natural grace, and Northwoods romance. This stamp is especially fitting for Minnesota weddings, lake celebrations, woodland stationery, floral correspondence, graduation announcements, thank you notes, travel mail, and messages celebrating romance, roots, or meaningful new beginnings.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The State Birds and Flowers issue was a 50-stamp se-tenant pane released in 1982 to celebrate the official birds and flowers of every U.S. state. The project began after Fleetwood commissioned original paintings from father-and-son wildlife artists Arthur and Alan Singer, whose artwork impressed U.S. Postal Service officials. Each stamp featured unique watercolor artwork, making the issue the first set of its size to include original art for every individual stamp. It was the second U.S. sheet of 50 with all different designs and remained among the most popular issues in U.S. postal history.
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
