STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of postage stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features Moss Campion (Silene acaulis), a hardy alpine wildflower known for forming dense cushion-like mats across rocky mountain landscapes. The design presents a cluster of bright pink blossoms emerging from a tight mound of dark green foliage. Each flower displays five rounded petals with a small notch at the tip, surrounding a pale central disk. The composition highlights the vibrant flowers rising from the compact cushion of leaves, emphasizing the plant’s unique growth form against a clean background.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Moss Campion is a small perennial plant found in alpine and arctic environments across North America, Europe, and Asia. Rather than growing upright, the plant forms low, dense cushions that hug the ground, helping it survive extreme winds and cold temperatures. The tiny leaves are tightly packed together, creating a moss-like surface from which numerous bright pink to magenta flowers emerge in late spring and summer. Each blossom is only about half an inch wide but appears striking against the rugged terrain of high mountain slopes and tundra landscapes.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, Moss Campion symbolizes endurance, resilience, and quiet perseverance. Its ability to thrive in some of the harshest environments on Earth—high mountains and arctic tundra—makes it a powerful emblem of strength under adversity. The compact cushion form represents protection and stability, while the bright blossoms signify hope and beauty emerging even in severe conditions.
Historically, Moss Campion has fascinated botanists and naturalists studying alpine ecosystems because of its remarkable longevity and slow growth; some individual cushion plants are believed to live for decades or even centuries. Its presence in extreme environments also reflects the adaptability of life in challenging climates. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, Moss Campion stands as a striking tribute to the resilience of nature and the remarkable diversity of America’s native wildflowers.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
