STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1989 North Carolina Statehood stamp features a branch of dogwood blossoms, North Carolina’s state flower, set against a dramatic black background. Created by artist Bob Timberlake, who also designed the South Carolina Bicentenary Statehood stamp, the design shows all or part of nine dogwood flowers. Issued as the 12th stamp in the Bicentenary Statehood series, this commemorative honored North Carolina’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution and admission as the 12th state. North Carolina became a state on November 21, 1789, and the stamp was issued on August 22, 1989, in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The Bicentenary Statehood series honored the 200th anniversaries of statehood for the original 13 states. Issued from 1987 through 1990, the stamps appeared in the order in which the former colonies ratified the U.S. Constitution, with each design featuring symbols, scenery, or historic imagery associated with the state. The North Carolina stamp was the 12th stamp in the series and the first one not issued in the state capital; its first day ceremony was held in Fayetteville, where ratification had occurred. It was printed by the American Bank Note Company in panes of 50 within sheets of 200 using lithographed, engraved, and photogravure methods.
