STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: Brilliant red plumage against a snowy branch makes the Northern Cardinal one of the most striking photographs in the 2020 Winter Scenes issue. USPS released the 10-design Forever stamp booklet on October 16, 2020, in Winter Park, Florida, celebrating the beauty and serenity of snowy landscapes across the northern United States. Art director and designer Derry Noyes selected existing photographs featuring winter wildlife, barns, trees, horses, and snow-covered scenery. Ashton Potter (USA) Ltd. printed the self-adhesive stamps using offset lithography.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is one of North America’s most recognizable songbirds. Adult males are distinguished by brilliant red plumage, a prominent crest, and a contrasting dark facial mask surrounding a reddish-orange bill. Females are more subdued in warm brown and buff tones with touches of red on the wings, tail, and crest. Cardinals are year-round residents throughout much of their range and are frequent visitors to backyard feeders, woodland edges, gardens, and shrubby habitats.

NORTHERN CARDINALS IN WINTER: Because Northern Cardinals remain in their territories throughout the year, their vivid red plumage becomes particularly dramatic against bare branches and fresh snow. During cold weather, cardinals fluff their feathers to trap insulating air and often gather near reliable food sources. Their willingness to visit feeders makes them one of the most familiar and welcome birds of the winter landscape.

CARDINALS & CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS: The bright red cardinal has become closely associated with Christmas and winter holiday decor. Its natural coloring complements traditional red-and-green seasonal palettes, while its presence during the coldest months gives it a strong connection to snowy landscapes, evergreen branches, wreaths, greeting cards, ornaments, and other familiar holiday imagery.

WINTER WILDLIFE & HOLIDAY STYLE: White snow dominates the design while the cardinal’s brilliant red plumage creates a vivid focal point, supported by soft gray and natural brown tones. The palette pairs beautifully with traditional red, evergreen, ivory, white, kraft paper, tartan, woodland illustrations, and rustic holiday stationery. Whether your cards are classic, natural, farmhouse, woodland, or bird-inspired, this stamp adds instant seasonal color without overwhelming the envelope.

CARDINALS & SYMBOLISM: Cardinals are widely associated with vitality, warmth, devotion, hope, and remembrance. Because they remain visible through winter when many other birds have migrated, their bright color can feel especially uplifting against a quiet seasonal landscape. In popular tradition, cardinals have also come to represent the comforting memory of loved ones and the feeling that those we miss remain close in spirit.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Northern Cardinal design symbolizes hope, warmth, devotion, remembrance, resilience, and joy. Its vivid red color standing out against winter snow suggests life, energy, and beauty even during the coldest season. For Christmas cards and meaningful correspondence, this stamp conveys warmth, connection, and the enduring presence of those we hold dear.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS issued Winter Scenes in 2020 as a 10-design Forever stamp booklet celebrating the serenity and unexpected color of snowy seasonal landscapes. Five designs featured winter wildlife, while the others highlighted barns, snow-covered trees, a woodland road, and horses pulling a sleigh. Together, the photographs present winter as a season filled not only with snow and stillness, but also wildlife, activity, color, and quiet beauty.
