STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: Issued on July 30, 1947, in San Francisco, California, this 25-cent airmail stamp commemorates the expanding possibilities of international aviation during the postwar era. Its finely engraved design depicts a Boeing B-377 Stratocruiser flying above the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, with the city's waterfront skyline visible beneath the sweeping suspension cables. The stamp was created for international airmail service to destinations in the Pacific, Asia, and parts of Africa, reflecting new postal rates established in November 1946. William K. Schrage designed the stamp for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Edward R. Grove engraved the central illustration, and Charles A. Smith engraved the lettering and numerals. Produced by rotary press, the issue appeared in both wet and later dry printings.

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO–OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE: Opened to traffic on November 12, 1936, the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge connects San Francisco with Oakland through Yerba Buena Island. Constructed during the Great Depression, the original bridge was an extraordinary engineering achievement, combining major suspension spans, a tunnel, and a cantilever section across San Francisco Bay. For decades, the Bay Bridge has served as a vital transportation link between the cities of the East Bay and San Francisco. Its dramatic towers, cables, and waterfront setting make it one of Northern California's most recognizable architectural landmarks.

THE BOEING B-377 STRATOCRUISER: The Boeing B-377 Stratocruiser was a luxurious, long-range passenger aircraft developed from the Boeing C-97 military transport following World War II. Known for its spacious pressurized cabin, double-deck arrangement, and distinctive fuselage, the Stratocruiser represented a major step forward in commercial air travel. Introduced into airline service in 1949, it became associated with the elegant era of long-distance propeller-driven passenger flights. The aircraft depicted on this 1947 stamp reflects the promise of advanced international aviation before the widespread arrival of commercial jetliners.

AIRMAIL & THE GOLDEN AGE OF FLIGHT: By the late 1940s, aviation had transformed global communication, dramatically reducing the time required to send letters and documents across oceans and continents. Improved aircraft, expanded international routes, and specialized airmail postage helped connect families, businesses, and communities separated by great distances. International airmail stamps represented more than postal payment; they celebrated the speed, technology, and expanding geographic reach of modern communication.

SAN FRANCISCO, AVIATION & PACIFIC CONNECTIONS: San Francisco developed into an important gateway for transpacific aviation during the twentieth century. Earlier flying boats, including Pan American Airways' famous Clippers, helped establish pioneering air routes across the Pacific, while subsequent land-based aircraft expanded the possibilities of passenger and mail transportation. The Bay Bridge and Stratocruiser together represent two defining forms of twentieth-century transportation: monumental infrastructure connecting communities across the bay and aircraft linking destinations across the world.

CALIFORNIA WEDDINGS & VINTAGE STYLE: The stamp's deep blue engraved artwork complements ivory, cream, navy, powder blue, silver, gray, and vintage-inspired stationery. Its distinctive combination of aviation and San Francisco architecture makes it particularly meaningful for Bay Area weddings, destination celebrations, airline and pilot weddings, travel-inspired invitations, and California correspondence. Paired with classic calligraphy, historic maps, or elegant minimalist envelopes, this stamp adds both artistic detail and a memorable sense of place.

BRIDGES, AIRPLANES & SYMBOLISM: Bridges represent connection, cooperation, transition, and the ability to overcome physical separation. Aircraft evoke freedom, exploration, ambition, and the excitement of reaching new destinations. Combined in a single historic composition, the Bay Bridge and Stratocruiser create a powerful representation of human ingenuity, technological progress, and the relationships made possible through travel and communication.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge design symbolizes connection, freedom, adventure, progress, ambition, and shared journeys. The bridge represents bringing people and places together, while the aircraft soaring overhead suggests opportunity, discovery, and looking toward the future. For wedding invitations, anniversaries, and meaningful correspondence, this stamp conveys lasting relationships, new beginnings, and the excitement of traveling through life together.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: In 1947, the United States Post Office Department released three engraved international airmail stamps reflecting the expansion of overseas air transportation and new rates established in 1946. The 25-cent design depicted a Boeing Stratocruiser above the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, the 15-cent design featured a Lockheed Constellation over New York, and the 10-cent design presented an aircraft above the Pan American Union Building in Washington, D.C. Together, these stamps celebrated modern aircraft, prominent American landmarks, and the growing importance of international aviation in connecting the United States with the world.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.

GUMMED STAMPS: Postage stamps with a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
