STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2021 Santa Claus, Sleigh, and Reindeer in Flight stamp was issued as the fourth design in the USPS A Visit From St. Nick set of four Forever stamps celebrating Santa’s Christmas Eve journey. Original artwork by Brad Woodard shows Santa traveling through a dark, star-filled night sky in his sleigh, with four reindeer visible as they fly across the face of a full moon. Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamps around Woodard’s illustrations. The issue debuted on October 7, 2021, in Santa Claus, Indiana, and was printed by Ashton Potter (USA) Ltd. using offset printing. Issued in double-sided booklets of 20 self-adhesive stamps, the four coordinated designs create a sequential holiday narrative that begins on a snowy rooftop and ends with Santa flying away through the night.

The title references the famous Christmas poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, commonly known as The Night Before Christmas, which helped shape many of the familiar characteristics associated with the modern American image of Santa Claus.
