STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: On July 24, 1992 the USPS issued a set of postage stamps honoring 50 of the most popular varieties of wildflowers that grow across the United States. Each of the species featured on these lovely stamps is native to North America and can be found today in at least one of the 50 states. This stamp features Sessile Bellwort (Uvularia sessilifolia), a graceful woodland plant native to eastern North America. The design presents the plant’s slender green stem bearing elongated leaves and delicate, drooping yellow blossoms. Each flower is narrow and bell-shaped with six long, slightly twisted petals that taper toward the tips. The light background allows the plant’s soft yellow tones and elegant form to stand out clearly, emphasizing the understated beauty of this woodland species.
FLOWER DESCRIPTION: Sessile Bellwort is a perennial wildflower commonly found in shaded forests and woodland edges. The plant typically grows between 6 and 18 inches tall and produces one or two nodding blossoms beneath its leaves. The flowers are pale yellow and elongated, forming narrow bells that hang gently from the stems. Unlike some related species, its leaves are attached directly to the stem without noticeable stalks—hence the term “sessile.” Blooming in early to mid-spring, the plant adds a subtle wash of color to forest understories before the canopy fully leafs out.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Spiritually, Sessile Bellwort symbolizes humility, quiet awareness, and the beauty of subtle presence. Its downward-facing blossoms and delicate form reflect modesty and inward reflection. Because it grows quietly in woodland shade rather than open fields, it is often associated with contemplation and the appreciation of small, easily overlooked wonders in nature.
Historically, bellwort species were recognized by Indigenous peoples and early herbalists for their mild medicinal uses, particularly in preparations made from the plant’s roots. The plant’s gentle appearance and springtime blooming have also made it a symbol of renewal and the quiet reawakening of forest life after winter. As depicted on the 1992 29¢ stamp, Sessile Bellwort stands as a graceful tribute to the subtle beauty and ecological richness of North America’s woodland wildflowers.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The 1992 American Wildflower postage stamp series was a commemorative issue featuring a pane of 50 different 29-cent stamps, with each stamp displaying a unique watercolor illustration of a native U.S. wildflower. The series was released on July 24, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, to coincide with the AmeriFlora '92 international exposition. Alaska-based watercolor artist Karen Mallary designed the artwork and selected the 50 distinct flowers featured in the collection, with at least one stamp/flower representing each of the 50 states. The U.S. Postal Service described the 1992 American Wildflower series as carrying a message of "natural grace and beauty". In dedicating the pane of 50 different stamps, Assistant Postmaster General Gordon Morison stated they would "blanket the postal landscape" and carry the message that "our nation's wildflowers add natural grace and beauty to our lives".
GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
