STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: Two deer foraging near the edge of a snow-covered forest provide a peaceful wildlife portrait in the 2020 Winter Scenes issue. The photograph captures the animals against a wintry woodland setting, emphasizing their natural brown coloring and the quiet beauty of wildlife surviving through the colder months. USPS released the 10-design Forever stamp booklet on October 16, 2020, in Winter Park, Florida, celebrating the serenity and unexpected beauty of northern winter landscapes. Art director and designer Derry Noyes selected existing photographs featuring winter wildlife, barns, trees, snow-covered scenery, and horses. Ashton Potter (USA) Ltd. printed the self-adhesive stamps using offset lithography.

ABOUT DEER: Deer belong to the family Cervidae, a group of hoofed mammals that includes white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose, and caribou. Known for their graceful movement, alert ears, keen senses, and seasonal adaptations, deer inhabit forests, woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, and mountainous regions across much of the Northern Hemisphere. Most deer species are herbivores that feed on grasses, leaves, shoots, buds, twigs, and other plant material, adjusting their diets as seasonal food availability changes.

DEER IN WINTER: Winter presents significant challenges for deer, particularly in regions with deep snow and prolonged cold. As nutritious vegetation becomes scarce, deer increasingly browse woody twigs, buds, and other available plant material. Their winter coats provide additional insulation, while sheltered forests help reduce exposure to wind and severe weather. Deer may follow established trails through snow to conserve energy and move between feeding areas and protective cover.

DEER & WOODLAND HABITATS: Forest edges provide important habitat for many deer species, offering a combination of shelter, food, and access to open areas. Trees and shrubs help protect deer from harsh weather, while nearby clearings provide seasonal opportunities for grazing and browsing. Deer also influence woodland ecosystems through their feeding habits, which can affect the growth and regeneration of young trees and understory plants.

DEER & CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS: Deer and reindeer are among the most recognizable animals associated with winter holiday art and decoration. Although ordinary woodland deer are distinct from the reindeer of Christmas folklore, their graceful silhouettes, warm brown coats, and connection to snowy forests make them natural subjects for Christmas cards, ornaments, wreaths, and woodland holiday stationery. Their presence in winter landscapes evokes peaceful countryside scenes and the enduring appeal of nature during the holiday season.

WOODLAND WINTER & HOLIDAY STYLE: Bright white snow establishes the winter setting, complemented by warm brown deer, soft gray woodland tones, muted green vegetation, and dark natural accents. This understated palette pairs beautifully with kraft paper, ivory, forest green, chocolate brown, burgundy, natural wood, pinecone illustrations, and rustic holiday stationery. For Christmas cards with woodland, country, farmhouse, cabin, traditional, or nature-inspired styling, this stamp adds warmth and character without overwhelming the envelope.

DEER & SYMBOLISM: Deer have long been associated with gentleness, grace, sensitivity, intuition, and renewal in various cultural traditions. Their attentive behavior and quiet movement through forests suggest awareness and adaptability, while their recurring presence in seasonal landscapes connects them with the cycles of nature. In contemporary symbolism, deer often represent peacefulness, compassion, family bonds, and harmony with the natural world.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Two Deer design symbolizes gentleness, companionship, harmony, resilience, renewal, and peaceful connection. The pair of deer suggests togetherness and mutual awareness, while their presence in a snowy woodland represents adaptability and the quiet persistence of life through winter. For Christmas cards, winter greetings, and meaningful correspondence, this stamp conveys warmth, serenity, appreciation for nature, and the enduring importance of caring relationships.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS issued Winter Scenes in 2020 as a 10-design Forever stamp booklet celebrating the serenity and unexpected color of snowy seasonal landscapes. Five designs featured winter wildlife, including deer, a cardinal, an owl, a blue jay, and a rabbit, while the remaining photographs highlighted barns, snow-covered trees, a woodland road, and horses pulling a sleigh. Together, the photographs present winter as a season filled not only with snow and stillness, but also wildlife, movement, tradition, color, and quiet beauty.
