STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2018 Meyer Lemons stamp was issued on January 19, 2018, in Kenner, Louisiana, as a 2-cent denominated mail-use stamp intended for additional postage. This stamp features a whole Meyer lemon beside freshly cut wedges, rendered in pen and ink and watercolor by illustrator John Burgoyne. USPS art director Derry Noyes designed the stamp using Burgoyne’s existing illustration. Banknote Corporation of America printed the self-adhesive issue using offset lithography with microprinting for large coil production.
ABOUT MEYER LEMONS: Meyer lemons are prized for their thin skin, fragrant aroma, deep yellow color, and sweeter, less sharply acidic flavor than many conventional lemons. They are generally considered a hybrid with characteristics of both lemons and mandarins or sweet oranges. The fruit is popular in baking, preserves, cocktails, sauces, desserts, and other recipes where its aromatic citrus flavor can be showcased.
MEYER LEMONS & GARDENS: Meyer lemon trees are compact enough to grow in home gardens throughout suitable citrus climates and can also thrive in containers where winters are colder. Their glossy evergreen foliage, fragrant white blossoms, and bright yellow fruit make them both productive and highly ornamental plants. That combination of flowers, greenery, and fruit gives this stamp a natural connection to garden-inspired stationery and celebrations.
MEYER LEMONS & WEDDING STYLE: Sunny yellow fruit and fresh green leaves make this stamp especially beautiful with ivory, white, sage, olive, soft blue, terracotta, yellow, and other garden-inspired wedding colors. For brides planning garden, summer, vineyard, citrus-grove, Mediterranean-inspired, or outdoor celebrations, the lemon design adds an upbeat botanical accent to invitation envelopes and layered vintage postage.
FRANK N. MEYER & THE MEYER LEMON: The fruit takes its American name from Frank N. Meyer, a plant explorer working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During his travels in China in the early 1900s, Meyer encountered the compact citrus tree and sent plant material back to the United States. The tree subsequently became popular with American gardeners and eventually with cooks who valued its distinctive flavor and fragrance.
LEMONS & SYMBOLISM: Lemons have long been associated with freshness, vitality, abundance, hospitality, and the pleasures of the table. Their brilliant yellow color evokes sunshine, optimism, and joyful energy, while fruit-bearing trees naturally suggest growth and prosperity. These associations make lemon postage especially fitting for weddings, housewarmings, celebrations, and correspondence marking a fresh beginning.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Meyer Lemons design symbolizes optimism, vitality, abundance, freshness, growth, and joyful new beginnings. The ripe fruit suggests the rewards of patient cultivation, while its sunny yellow color evokes warmth and happiness. For weddings and meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses a bright beginning, a flourishing future, and the sweetness found in a life carefully nurtured together.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS issued Meyer Lemons as a standalone definitive issue rather than as part of a named stamp series. It belongs to a broader group of low-denomination fruit definitives used for additional postage, alongside later fruit subjects such as Strawberries, Grapes, and Pears. These practical mail-use stamps combined small denominations with colorful food and botanical subjects that could be mixed with other postage to reach exact mailing rates.
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
