Stamp History
The United States Postal Service (USPS) issued a 33-cent California Statehood commemorative stamp in Sacramento, California, on September 8, 2000. The stamp, designed by Carl Herrman of Carlsbad, California, commemorated California's sesquicentennial.The stamp features an Art Wolfe photograph of cliff tops at the southern end of the Big Sur coastline with ice plant blooming in the foreground.On February 2, 1848, Mexico and the United States signed a treaty ending the war with Mexico. As part of the peace treaty, Mexico ceded to the United States a vast portion of the Southwest, including present-day California.
