STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 41-cent “Chrysanthemum” postage stamp is part of the United States Postal Service (USPS) Beautiful Blooms series, a modern floral program introduced to showcase flowers as expressive works of art rather than strict botanical studies. Issued by the USPS on August 10th, 2007, in Portland, Oregon, the series reflected a mid-2000s design shift toward bold color, painterly style, and emotionally resonant imagery suitable for everyday correspondence.
The stamp’s design features a chrysanthemum blossom shown from below in close-up, filling the stamp with layers of finely arranged petals radiating outward from a dense central core. The petals are rendered in rich, saturated green tones, with subtle variations in shading that emphasize the flower’s intricate structure and rhythmic symmetry. The background remains understated, drawing full attention to the bloom’s complexity and calm order. The overall effect is elegant and contemplative—capturing the chrysanthemum’s long-standing associations with endurance, harmony, and dignified beauty.
FLOWER INFORMATION: Native to China, chrysanthemums were first cultivated as early as the 15th century BCE. In ancient China, the flower was prized not only for its beauty but also for its medicinal properties, believed to promote longevity and vitality. Chrysanthemums became one of the “Four Gentlemen” in Chinese art—alongside plum blossom, orchid, and bamboo—symbolizing virtue, integrity, and resilience.
By the 8th century, the chrysanthemum was introduced to Japan, where it achieved extraordinary cultural significance. The flower became associated with the Imperial family, and the stylized 16-petal chrysanthemum was adopted as the Imperial Seal of Japan. In Japanese culture, the chrysanthemum represents perfection, honor, and the balance between strength and refinement. The annual Festival of Happiness (Chōyō no Sekku) celebrates the flower as a symbol of long life and renewal.
In Europe, chrysanthemums arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries, initially regarded as exotic curiosities. Over time, they became valued for their late-season blooms, offering color when many other flowers had faded. In parts of Europe, particularly France, Italy, and Spain, chrysanthemums came to be associated with mourning and remembrance, commonly used in cemeteries and memorials—an association that contrasts with their more celebratory meanings in East Asia.
In the United States, chrysanthemums gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as hardy, decorative garden plants. Often called “mums,” they became emblematic of autumn, symbolizing endurance, warmth, and reliability. American cultural meanings tend to emphasize cheerfulness, loyalty, and longevity, reflecting the flower’s ability to thrive late into the growing season.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: Across cultures, the chrysanthemum is revered not for fleeting beauty, but for its steadiness and endurance—it blooms late in the season, when conditions are cooler and more demanding, making it a powerful symbol of grace under pressure and wisdom earned through time. Spiritually, the chrysanthemum’s layered petals radiating from a calm, stable center represent harmony amid complexity. This structure is often interpreted as a visual metaphor for a centered soul: many experiences, responsibilities, and emotions held together by an unshaken inner core. It speaks to emotional balance, moral clarity, and composure, especially during periods of transition or reflection.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The “Beautiful Blooms” series is a set of 10 different flowers designed by artist Carl T. Herrman of Carlsbad, California, and was first issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on August 10, 2007 in Portland, Oregon. Photographer Mark Laita of Culver City, California, created the artistic images of the beautiful blooms featured on these stamps. Unlike botanical or garden-specific programs that focused on realism or seasonal cycles, this series highlighted bold, decorative blossoms presented almost as portraits—lush, close-up views that emphasize color, texture, and visual impact. These magnificent flowers may be seen coast to coast, not only in gardens, but floating on ponds, and adorning trees. The flowers featured were popular, widely recognized blooms commonly associated with bouquets and celebrations. The ten flowers depicted on the Beautiful Blooms series stamps are echinacea (also known as the purple coneflower), tulip, water lily, poppy, spider chrysanthemum, orange gerbera daisy, iris, dahlia, vulcan magnolia, and red gerbera daisy.
