Vintage Unused Empire State Building Stamps (New York City, NYC, Celebrate the Century - 1930s, Iconic Architecture, Blue) USPS Postage 32c
Add a touch of vintage NYC charm to your correspondence with this unused Empire State Building Stamp! Featuring a detailed pencil sketch by artist Paul Calle, these 32 cent mint condition USPS postage stamps are still valid for current use.
Issued on September 10, 1998 as part of the Celebrate the Century series, this stamp commemorates significant cultural events from the 1930s. The iconic Empire State Building, completed in 1931 and holding the title of tallest building in the world for over 40 years, is featured on this stamp.
On the back, you'll find the following text: "Completed in 1931, New York City's Empire State Building has 102 stories and rises 1,250 feet above the ground." This 52-story building was one of the tallest in the world at the time of its opening, and remained the tallest west of New York City for 40 years.
The First Day of Issue Ceremony for this stamp was held at the Terminal Tower Building in Cleveland, Ohio. This stamp is part of a larger set of 150 stamps, each honoring significant moments from a different decade. Completed in 2000, this extensive series is the longest and most ambitious commemorative stamp series in US history.
Owned by many famous individuals over the years, the land where the Empire State Building stands was originally sold for just $2,600 by the City of New York. Its official opening in 1931 was announced by President Herbert Hoover, who turned on the lights from Washington, DC. Construction of the Empire State Building began in 1930, with workers building the frame at a rapid pace of 4 1/2 stories per week. Surprisingly, it only took them one year and 45 days to complete the building, including work on Sundays and holidays. Photographer Lewis Hine even documented their work from 1,000 feet above Fifth Avenue in a specially designed basket. Boasting 102 floors, 73 elevators, and 6,500 windows, the Empire State Building held the title of world's tallest building until 1972. Today, it remains a beloved symbol of New York City and a must-see for any visitor.
Use them to add a special touch to your letters and packages. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a piece of American culture.
