STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2011 Flax stamp was issued as one of five 29-cent designs in the USPS Herbs series. This stamp features a delicate flowering flax plant rendered in naturalistic botanical detail by artist Teresa Fasolino, with Phil Jordan serving as designer, art director, and typographer. The design shows slender green stems and airy five-petaled blue blossoms, along with characteristic plant structures. This stamp was issued on April 7, 2011, in New York, New York, as part of a self-adhesive pane of 20 and was printed by Avery Dennison using photogravure.

ABOUT FLAX: Flax (Linum perenne) is a slender flowering plant known for its delicate blue blossoms and fine stems. Species within the genus Linum have long been valued for ornamental, agricultural, and cultural uses. Blue flax flowers are typically five-petaled and bloom with a light, airy appearance that gives the plant a graceful wildflower quality.

FLAX, LINEN & NATURAL FIBERS: Flax has an especially important place in human history because related cultivated flax plants have been used for thousands of years to produce linen. Fibers extracted from the stems are processed into thread and woven into fabric used for clothing, household textiles, paper, and decorative goods. This connection gives flax strong associations with craftsmanship, heritage, natural materials, and traditional domestic arts.

FLAXSEED & CULINARY TRADITIONS: Flaxseed has also been valued as a food ingredient and source of oil. The seeds may be used whole or ground in breads, cereals, baked goods, and other foods, while linseed oil has historically had both culinary and industrial applications. This versatility makes flax unusual among plants because it connects botanical beauty with food, fiber, and practical household use.

FLAX & WEDDING THEMES: The soft blue blossoms on this stamp make it especially appealing for weddings that incorporate blue, wildflower, garden, rustic, or botanical palettes. Blue flowers are often used to satisfy the traditional “something blue” element of wedding symbolism, while flax itself evokes natural materials, craftsmanship, and enduring usefulness. This stamp pairs beautifully with white, ivory, greenery, lavender, and other soft floral postage.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Flax design symbolizes endurance, usefulness, creativity, simplicity, prosperity, and natural beauty. Its long association with linen and household craftsmanship evokes continuity and care, while its delicate blue flowers suggest peace, sincerity, and gentle affection. For weddings and meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses lasting partnership, thoughtful connection, and graceful new beginnings.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The USPS issued the five-stamp Herbs series on April 7, 2011, in New York City. The 29-cent designs feature oregano, flax, foxglove, lavender, and sage, with each plant shown flowering alongside characteristic foliage, flowers, or seed structures. Teresa Fasolino created the original oil paintings, while Phil Jordan designed and art-directed the issue. The stamps were released in self-adhesive pane and coil formats and were denominated at the postcard rate. Scott 4506 represents the Flax design from the pane issue.
