STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2011 Foxglove stamp was issued as one of five 29-cent designs in the USPS Herbs series. This stamp features a flowering stalk of foxglove rendered in naturalistic botanical detail by artist Teresa Fasolino, with Phil Jordan serving as designer, art director, and typographer. Each stamp in the series depicts its plant in bloom together with characteristic foliage or seed structures. This stamp was issued on April 7, 2011, in New York, New York, as part of a self-adhesive pane of 20 and was printed by Avery Dennison using photogravure.
ABOUT FOXGLOVE: Common foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is a biennial or short-lived perennial native to Europe and naturalized in many other regions. Its tall flowering spikes are lined with tubular, bell-shaped blossoms that commonly appear in shades of pink, purple, rose, or white and often feature darker markings inside the flower. Foxglove is especially associated with cottage gardens, woodland edges, and naturalistic plantings.
FOXGLOVE & COTTAGE GARDENS: Foxgloves are iconic cottage-garden flowers because their tall vertical spikes rise dramatically above lower-growing plants. They pair beautifully with roses, delphiniums, lavender, ferns, and other romantic garden flowers. Their loose, natural form makes them especially fitting for garden weddings, woodland celebrations, English-inspired floral themes, and correspondence with a soft botanical aesthetic.
FOXGLOVE & POLLINATORS: The tubular flowers of foxglove are particularly attractive to bumblebees and other pollinators. Their spotted interiors act as visual guides directing visiting insects toward nectar. A tall foxglove in bloom can become a focal point in a pollinator garden while also providing valuable floral resources.
FOXGLOVE & HERBAL HISTORY: Foxglove has an important place in the history of medicine because compounds called cardiac glycosides derived from Digitalis plants contributed to the development of important heart medicines. However, all parts of foxglove are poisonous if improperly consumed, so the plant should not be treated as a home herbal remedy. Its inclusion in the Herbs series reflects its significant historical association with medicinal botany.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Foxglove design symbolizes creativity, intuition, transformation, resilience, protection, and connection with the natural world. Its tall flowering form suggests growth and aspiration, while its delicate pink blossoms evoke grace and heartfelt affection. For weddings and meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses romantic beauty, flourishing love, and the promise of growth together.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The USPS issued the five-stamp Herbs series on April 7, 2011, in New York City. The 29-cent designs feature oregano, flax, foxglove, lavender, and sage, with each plant shown flowering alongside characteristic foliage or seed structures. Teresa Fasolino created the original oil paintings, while Phil Jordan designed and art-directed the issue. The stamps were released in self-adhesive pane and coil formats and were denominated at the postcard rate. Scott 4507 represents the Foxglove design from the pane issue.
GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use the adequate amount of postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. Check current postage rates at USPS.com.
