Vintage Unused Love Series Heart-Shaped Globe Stamps (Earth, World, Blue) USPS Postage 29c

This Heart Shaped Globe stamp was first issued on May 9, 1991 and was part of the popular Love Series featuring heart-shaped designs. During this time, the world was facing the Persian Gulf War and the stamp's message of "what the world needs now is love" resonated with many Americans. This unused vintage stamp is perfect for use on wedding invitations, Valentine's Day cards, Earth Day celebrations, and other love-themed letters. 

The design was created by Harry Zelenko and was not used for a stamp until three years after it was approved by the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee in 1988. The stamp showcases a heart-shaped globe with different colored continents, and Zelenko's art was also featured on the first ATM stamps. 

At the same ceremony where this stamp was unveiled, three other love-themed postal items (a sheet and booklet form of this stamp, a 52¢ stamp, and a stamped envelope) were also issued. The ceremony took place at the Honolulu Zoo and "Mari" the elephant was the special guest who revealed each design. 

The Love Series was created based on the popularity of Christmas stamps and was first issued in 1973. It was not intended to be a series, but in 1982 another Love stamp was released. Over the years, love-themed stamps were issued sporadically and the USPS stated that they were meant for not just Valentine's Day mail, but also for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. In 1987, the USPS officially declared it a series and new Love stamps have been issued almost every year since then. These stamps are usually on sale longer than commemorative stamps and are printed in greater quantities. They have even been known to go back to press for additional printings if there is high demand.
