Seashell Set of 5 Stamps (Beach, Ocean, Sea, Nautical, Pink) Vintage Unused USPS Postage 22c ea/$1.10 per set
These sets of five stamps features stunning designs of Frilled Dogwinkle, Reticulated Helmet, New England Neptune, Calico Scallop, and Lightning Whelk, all found in North American waters. Issued in 1985, these stamps are still valid for current use with a face value of 22 cents each ($1.10 for each set of five stamps).
Designed by Peter Cocci, these stamps feature vibrant color photos from the National Museum in Washington, DC. The images depict two types of mollusks: univalves, the largest class of mollusks with single shells, and bivalves, which have two shells hinged together.
This series was released at a special First Day ceremony at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This event also commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Boston Malacological Club, the second oldest seashell club in the US. Seashell collecting, known as conchology, has a rich history documented by scholars like Aristotle and Pliny the Elder. Today, it's a popular hobby with impressive collections on display at the Bailey Matthews National Shell Museum on Sanibel Island, Florida.
These stamps not only showcase the beauty of these shells, but also the significance of their role in history. Seashells have been used for various purposes throughout the centuries, from decorations to sculptures to even currency by American Indians. With over 5,000 stamps featuring seashells from countries around the world, this set is a must-have for any stamp enthusiast or lover of the sea. Add a touch of whimsy and charm to your letters with these vintage unused Seashell Stamps.
