The design is part of the larger Nature of America Sonoran Desert pane, which uses a panoramic acrylic painting by John Dawson to showcase the plants, animals, and habitat relationships of this biodiverse desert region. First issued on April 6, 1999, in Tucson, Arizona, this stamp was part of the first Nature of America issue, a USPS series created to celebrate major North American ecological communities.

The artwork was created by John Dawson, and the stamps were printed by Banknote Corporation of America using offset printing.
