The stamp design was created by renowned artist Bob Timberlake, who submitted three beautiful watercolor and gouache paintings. One featured the state flower (jasmine), another a live oak tree, and the third, three palmettos (the state tree) surrounded by sea oats. The palmettos were ultimately chosen for their instant recognition with South Carolina.
