STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2006 Southern Florida Wetland – Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow stamp was issued on October 4, 2006, in Naples, Florida, as one of ten 39-cent designs in the USPS Nature of America Southern Florida Wetland pane. Artist John D. Dawson created the detailed ecosystem artwork under the direction of USPS art director Ethel Kessler. The Cape Sable seaside sparrow appears within Dawson’s scientifically informed depiction of a southern Florida wetland community where freshwater and coastal habitats meet. Avery Dennison produced the self-adhesive stamps using photogravure.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Cape Sable seaside sparrow (Ammospiza maritima mirabilis) is a small, nonmigratory subspecies of seaside sparrow found only in South Florida. Its plumage is primarily brown, gray, and buff, with streaking that provides effective camouflage among grasses and sedges. This bird spends much of its life close to the ground and is strongly tied to open marl prairie and short-hydroperiod marsh habitats.

CAPE SABLE SEASIDE SPARROW HABITAT: The Cape Sable seaside sparrow is closely associated with freshwater and slightly brackish marl prairies in the southern Everglades ecosystem. It favors areas of moderately dense grasses with enough open space for movement near the ground. Because its cup-shaped nests are built only a short distance above the ground, successful breeding depends on suitable water levels that do not flood nesting areas during the breeding season.

CONSERVATION OF THE CAPE SABLE SEASIDE SPARROW: The Cape Sable seaside sparrow is federally listed as endangered and is one of the most imperiled birds associated with the Everglades. Changes to South Florida’s natural water flow, altered fire patterns, habitat conversion, flooding, and sea-level rise can all affect the specialized prairie habitat on which the bird depends. Its conservation has become closely linked to broader Everglades restoration and water-management efforts.

AN EVERGLADES ENDEMIC: The Cape Sable seaside sparrow occurs only in South Florida and is closely tied to the Everglades ecosystem. Its restricted distribution and specialized habitat requirements make it an especially distinctive symbol of the region’s biodiversity. The bird’s survival depends on maintaining the delicate balance of water, vegetation, and fire that shapes the marl prairies of the southern Everglades.

SOUTHERN FLORIDA WETLANDS: Southern Florida’s wetlands include sawgrass marshes, marl prairies, mangrove communities, sloughs, and coastal habitats shaped by alternating wet and dry seasons. These interconnected environments support an extraordinary diversity of plants and wildlife. Dawson’s stamp-pane artwork combines numerous native species into a single ecological scene, emphasizing the relationships between animals, plants, water, and habitat.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow design symbolizes resilience, adaptability, attentiveness, perseverance, and connection to place. This small bird’s dependence on a narrow and carefully balanced habitat evokes the importance of stability, protection, and harmony within one’s surroundings. For meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses quiet strength, endurance, and appreciation for rare and fragile natural beauty.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS introduced the Nature of America series in 1999 to celebrate major American ecosystems through detailed, scientifically informed artwork. Each large pane presented a different habitat populated by representative native plants and animals. The Southern Florida Wetland issue was the eighth installment in the twelve-year series. John D. Dawson illustrated the series under the art direction of Ethel Kessler, creating immersive scenes intended to encourage appreciation for the diversity and ecological relationships found in American landscapes.
