STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2006 Southern Florida Wetland – Snail Kite stamp was issued on October 4, 2006, in Naples, Florida, as one of ten 39-cent designs in the USPS Nature of America Southern Florida Wetland pane. Artist John D. Dawson created the ecosystem artwork under the direction of USPS designer and art director Ethel Kessler. The snail kite appears within a scientifically informed scene depicting the interconnected freshwater and coastal habitats of southern Florida. Avery Dennison produced the self-adhesive stamps using photogravure.

BIRD DESCRIPTION: The Everglade snail kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis plumbeus) is a medium-sized bird of prey distinguished by broad wings, a long tail, and an unusually slender, strongly curved bill. Adult males are generally slate gray with darker wings and tail, while females and immature birds are browner and more heavily streaked. Its specialized bill is adapted for extracting freshwater apple snails from their shells.

SNAIL KITES & APPLE SNAILS: Few North American raptors are as specialized in their feeding habits as the snail kite. In Florida, these birds depend heavily on freshwater apple snails, which they capture while flying slowly over marshes and shallow water. After grasping a snail with their feet, they perch nearby and use their deeply curved bills to remove the animal from its shell. This close relationship makes the health of snail kite populations strongly dependent on wetland conditions and abundant snail populations.

SNAIL KITE HABITAT: Snail kites inhabit freshwater marshes, lakes, sloughs, wet prairies, canals, and other shallow-water habitats where apple snails are accessible. In Florida, important habitat includes portions of the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, and other central and southern Florida wetlands. Changes in water depth can strongly influence where the birds feed, nest, and raise their young.

SNAIL KITE CONSERVATION: The Everglade snail kite is federally listed as endangered in the United States, where its natural range is restricted to Florida. Wetland loss, altered water-management regimes, changing water levels, and disruptions to apple-snail populations have all affected the bird historically. Conservation efforts focus heavily on protecting and restoring suitable freshwater wetlands and maintaining ecological conditions that support successful nesting and foraging.

A SPECIALIZED EVERGLADES RAPTOR: The snail kite is closely associated with Florida’s wetland identity because its survival depends so directly on healthy aquatic ecosystems. Unlike more generalist birds of prey, it occupies a narrow ecological niche shaped by freshwater marshes and its specialized snail diet. Its presence therefore reflects the intricate relationships among water, vegetation, prey, and wildlife that define the greater Everglades ecosystem.

SOUTHERN FLORIDA WETLANDS: Southern Florida’s wetlands include sawgrass marshes, wet prairies, sloughs, mangrove communities, and coastal habitats shaped by alternating wet and dry seasons. These interconnected environments support an exceptional diversity of plants and animals. Dawson’s stamp-pane artwork brings numerous native species together within one ecological scene, emphasizing the dependence of wildlife on the region’s complex water systems.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Snail Kite design symbolizes focus, adaptability, patience, resourcefulness, resilience, and harmony with one’s environment. The bird’s highly specialized way of life evokes the value of knowing one’s strengths and pursuing a clear path with precision. For meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses perseverance, purpose, and an appreciation for the delicate balance of the natural world.

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS introduced the Nature of America series in 1999 to celebrate major American ecosystems through detailed, scientifically informed artwork. Each large pane presented a different habitat populated by representative native plants and animals. The Southern Florida Wetland issue was the eighth installment in the twelve-year series. John D. Dawson illustrated the series under the art direction of Ethel Kessler, creating immersive scenes intended to encourage appreciation for the diversity and ecological relationships found in American landscapes.
