Southern Florida Wetland White Ibis Postage Stamps | Nature of America Series | Florida Everglades Birds | Vintage Unused USPS Postage 39c
This graceful white ibis wading through turquoise-blue water makes these unused vintage postage stamps especially striking for Florida, coastal, and nature-inspired wedding mail. Issued in 2006 as part of the USPS Nature of America series, this design comes from John D. Dawson’s richly detailed portrait of a southern Florida wetland ecosystem. The bird’s snowy white plumage and vivid coral-red bill create a beautiful contrast against the lush aquatic setting, giving wedding invitations, save the dates, destination celebrations, and other special correspondence a distinctive tropical Florida accent.
In pristine mint condition and valid for current postage use, each stamp holds a face value of 39-cents. These authentic USPS postage stamps are suitable for current mailing when used with the total required postage based on the weight of your mailing.

STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2006 Southern Florida Wetland – White Ibis stamp was issued on October 4, 2006, in Naples, Florida, as one of ten 39-cent designs in the USPS Nature of America Southern Florida Wetland pane. Artist John D. Dawson created the detailed ecosystem artwork under the direction of USPS designer and art director Ethel Kessler. This stamp features a white ibis standing amid blue-green wetland water and vegetation, its long coral-red bill providing a vivid focal point within the scene. Avery Dennison produced the self-adhesive stamps using photogravure.
BIRD DESCRIPTION: The white ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a distinctive wading bird recognized by its mostly white adult plumage, long downward-curving red-orange bill, pinkish-red legs, and flashes of black at the wingtips visible in flight. Its specialized bill is used to probe shallow water and soft mud for crustaceans, insects, small fish, and other aquatic prey. White ibises often forage in groups and may gather in large communal nesting colonies.
WHITE IBISES IN FLORIDA: White ibises are closely associated with Florida’s marshes, mangroves, lagoons, estuaries, ponds, and coastal wetlands. They are among the state’s most recognizable wading birds and are frequently seen moving methodically through shallow water in search of food. Their abundance and visibility have made them an enduring part of the visual character of South Florida and the greater Everglades ecosystem.
WHITE IBISES & WEDDING STYLE: The crisp white plumage of the ibis paired with coral-red accents and blue-green water creates a naturally sophisticated palette for wedding stationery. This stamp coordinates especially well with ivory, white, coral, turquoise, sea glass, sage, tropical green, and coastal blue invitation suites. Its elegant bird subject is particularly appealing for Florida destination weddings, waterfront ceremonies, tropical celebrations, and couples looking for vintage postage that feels refined without being traditionally floral.
THE WHITE IBIS & THE EVERGLADES: White ibises depend on the seasonal rise and fall of water across Florida’s wetlands. As water levels recede, aquatic prey becomes concentrated in shallow pools where the birds can feed efficiently. Because their breeding success is closely connected to wetland conditions and food availability, white ibises are useful indicators of the ecological health of the Everglades and other South Florida wetlands.
SOUTHERN FLORIDA WETLANDS: Southern Florida’s wetlands encompass sawgrass marshes, mangrove forests, sloughs, wet prairies, ponds, estuaries, and coastal habitats shaped by seasonal water cycles. These interconnected environments support an extraordinary diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, and native plants. Dawson’s artwork brings numerous species together within a single ecological scene, emphasizing the relationships among wildlife, vegetation, water, and habitat.
STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The White Ibis design symbolizes grace, balance, adaptability, renewal, purity, and purposeful movement. Its brilliant white plumage evokes clarity and new beginnings, while its life within constantly changing wetlands represents the ability to adapt while remaining grounded. For weddings and meaningful correspondence, this stamp expresses graceful partnership, fresh beginnings, and moving confidently together into a shared future.
STAMP SERIES HISTORY: USPS introduced the Nature of America series in 1999 to celebrate major American ecosystems through detailed, scientifically informed artwork. Each large pane presented a different habitat populated by representative native plants and animals. The Southern Florida Wetland issue was the eighth installment in the twelve-year series. John D. Dawson illustrated the series under the art direction of Ethel Kessler, creating immersive scenes intended to encourage appreciation for the diversity and ecological relationships found in American landscapes.
